It's senior year of high school, and like most Gen Z kids these days, Claire comes across Chad's Instagram profile because he has "SCAD 2020" in his bio. Claire gives Chad a follow, and she must seem just as interesting, because he returns the favor. It's September of 2016, and both Claire and Chad move to Savannah, GA, for their freshman year of college. While getting lunch to-go with her roommates, Claire spots Chad in a booth with his roommates at Bobbie's Diner. Claire knows exactly who he is. She doesn't say anything to him, because she's an introvert. It's the second week of freshman year. Chad is in the study room of the second floor of H at the Hive (their beloved dorm building). Claire takes a seat right in front of him and starts vigorously drawing a graphite boot. Chad is in awe of Claire's drawing skills, and Claire is intrigued by Chad's openness to talking to strangers. Chad invites Claire to church, three times a week. That is correct, three times a week. Claire accepts. The friendship period begins. Claire and Chad become dear friends, as they live two doors down from each other. They stay up until 7 AM talking; they dress up and go to Chipotle for Halloween together; they listen to each other complain about their partners. They seem like a couple to the public, but they are not. Claire becomes single two days before Christmas of 2016, and Chad becomes single around the end of January 2017. They know they will date, but they think it's too soon. The friendship period continues. It's Mother's Day of 2017, and Claire is needle-felting while Chad chills in her room. Chad casually asks Claire to become his girlfriend. Claire accepts. The friendship period ends. People assume they are each other's rebounds. They are 50 percent correct. The interracial adventure begins.
The year is 2020, and it's the final Friday of February. It's the evening of the annual Fibers Open Studio, and Claire's parents just arrived in Savannah, GA. Claire is expecting to stroll around Pepe Hall with her parents, like every year before, snacking on the delightful hors d'oeuvres and gazing at student work. Little does she know, Chad has coordinated something extravagant with his good friend, Ben Krueger, and the Chair of the Fibers department, Cayewah Easley. Claire is dressed like how she always dresses-- loud, vibrant, and just slightly tacky. Chad is dressed much better than how he usually dresses, but it doesn't throw Claire off. After all, it's the annual Fibers Open Studio. It's thirty after five. Everyone arrives at SCAD's Fibers building, Pepe Hall, a charming white building on the corner of Chatham Square. Claire shows her parents her work, poses for a couple cheeky pics, and right before she wanders into a classroom, Cayewah calls attention for a special announcement. It seems normal, because she's the Chair of the Fibers department; why wouldn't she give a speech at the biggest department show of the year? After mentioning a collaboration between the Fibers department and the Advertising department, Cayewah hands the microphone over to Chad. Claire still believes this is all normal, as Chad knows Cayewah well, and why wouldn't SCAD throw a collaboration between majors? Chad is nervous and has stage-fright, but takes the microphone anyways. Chad gives a touching speech and then marches through a labyrinth of people to get down on one knee in the heart of Pepe Hall. And that, is the very magical and surprising moment when Claire realizes her greatest companion is popping the big question. Claire accepts, and Chad awkwardly embraces her with many strangers watching.
