If I choose to rent a car and drive, what do I need to know and what are the directions?

Answer

The drive is 1 hour and 20 minutes from the Florence airport. You would need to obtain an International Driver's Permit (IDP) in advance. Its easy to get with an in person option (cheapest) or doing it online (more expensive). 1) Go to your nearest AAA store (you do not need to be a AAA member), bring your passport and ask for an IDP. It costs $20 and is good for 1 year. 2) Or obtain one online. Type in 'International Drivers Permit', fill out the form, pay $20 + $49.99 + shipping fee for delivery, provide your passport picture and copy of your Drivers license. DIRECTIONS: By car from Florence or Rome take the A1 (Milano-Napoli), exit at Valdarno and follow directions to Montevarchi and then the S.S. 408 towards Gaiole in Chianti. From the village of Gaiole in Chianti, follow the signs for "Borgo Casa al Vento" and Barbischio. Before entering the village of Barbischio, turn right and follow the road for 1.5 km.

Always choose the local currency (not US Dollars) for the transaction for the best exchange rate on your credit card at at ATMs.

Question

Is there anything unique I should know about Italy?

Answer

YES! Here are some tips: - Italian addresses are presented differently. For example, our venue will show: Strada Comunale, 6 = # 6 on Comunale Street (Strada means street) 53013 Gaiole in Chianti, SI, Italy = zip code of 53013, then the town which is Gaiole in Chianti in Italy - Celsius is used, not fahrenheit. So if someone says its 25 degrees they mean 25 degrees celsius which translates to 77 degrees fahrenheit. - Army time is used - The ground floor of buildings or hotel lobbies are referred to as floor 0 (the 1st floor would be the 2nd floor in our terms) - Speed is in kilometers, not mph - Italians drive on the same side of the road as we do - At a restaurant, you must actually ask for the check; they'll never just bring it over as they would find that rude

Question

What are some key words/phrases I should know?

Answer

- Hi! = Ciao! - Florence = Firenze - Rome = Roma - Where is the bathroom? = Dov e il bagno? - More wine please! = Piu vino per favore! - Cheers! = Saluti! - Strada = Street - Congratulations Chad & Robyn! = Congratulazioni Chad e Robyn!
