Travel Note
In the months leading up to your trip, use this checklist to make sure you’re ready for your adventure in beautiful Antigua, Guatemala! CHECK YOUR PASSPORT'S EXPIRATION DATE Guatemala requires that your passport be valid for at least 6 months after your travel dates. If you need to renew, consider that the regular processing can take 4–6 weeks, but expedited services are available. DOWNLOAD AND SET UP UBER Uber works in Guatemala City and is a safe, easy way to get around. In Antigua itself, you’ll likely walk or take tuk-tuks. NOTIFY YOUR BANK ABOUT YOUR TRAVEL DATES This helps avoid any blocks on your cards due to “suspicious” activity abroad. PLAN YOUR CASH STRATEGY The currency in Guatemala is the quetzal (GTQ). While many hotels and restaurants accept cards, cash is essential for markets, tips, small shops, and tuk-tuks. You can withdraw from ATMs in Antigua or exchange money at the airport upon arrival—rates are often similar.
Travel Note
ARRANGE TRANSPORT IN ADVANCE We recommend you book your transportation from the airport to antigua through the hotel. In Antigua, you can walk most places, take tuk-tuks, or have your hotel arrange a trusted taxi. LEARN A FEW SPANISH PHRASES You don’t need to be fluent, but knowing a handful of basic words and phrases will go a long way. Locals appreciate the effort, and it can make transactions smoother. PACK SMARTLY FOR THE WEATHER IN EARLY MAY Expect warm, sunny days (mid-70s to 80s °F) and cooler mornings/evenings. Layers work best, and a light sweater or jacket is handy for nighttime. PLAN A LITTLE TIME TO EXPLORE ANTIGUA If you have extra time, consider a walking tour, coffee farm visit, or exploring nearby ruins. FACTOR IN AIRPORT TRAVEL TIME Antigua is about an hour from Guatemala City airport with light traffic—but traffic is no joke and can get heavy, especially on weekends or holidays. To avoid delays, try to plan your arrival outside of rush hour, which is typically from 7–9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. DRESS COMFORTABLY Shorts and sandals are fine in Antigua’s warm climate, but many locals and travelers prefer light, breathable pants or dresses for sun protection and comfort. Streets are cobblestone so opt for sturdy walking shoes. BE CAUTIOUS WITH WATER Drink only bottled or filtered water (your hotel will have it). Many restaurants are perfectly safe for visitors, but stick to reputable spots. TIPPING IS APPRECIATED In restaurants, 10% is customary if service isn’t included. SAFETY: BE SMART, BUT NOT FEARFUL Antigua is very safe, and I’ve never had an issue. Still, follow common sense: don’t flash large amounts of cash when walking on the street, the hotel is perfectly fine. EMBRACE THE SLOWER PACE Antigua is a charming, walkable city meant to be savored—relax in a café, wander colorful streets, and soak in the views of the surrounding volcanoes.
