We met [working] in high school. Nicole was just her competitive self during a scavenger hunt, trying to find her way through a brand new building when she asked Emilio where something was in the building. He had no idea (it was brand new!), but knew in that moment that Nicole was something special. He decided the best way to capture Nicole's attention was to write his phone number on the soccer schedule, announce himself as the head coach, and say, "Hit me up if you ever come to a game." Nicole, unsure what to do with that information, chuckled and said "I'm probably not going to come to a game." But she kept his number, just in case. A month later, and a few other attempts by Emilio to get Nicole to hang out (she sidestepped each time, but only because she couldn't believe someone as sweet and loving as Emilio actually existed!), Emilio organized a happy hour with some other co-workers. Nicole knew it was Emilio's way to see one another outside of work, and finally used his phone number to confirm her attendance. With phone numbers exchanged, songs became our form of daily communication. At the beginning, the songs we sent coincided with something we were doing that day. Nicole was watching Formula 1? Speed Racer theme song. Emilio was feeling good about winning a soccer game? Lip Gloss by Lil Mama. A week into sending songs back and forth (before our first date!), Nicole thought to herself “this guy is cool… maybe I should keep these songs in a playlist. Would that be silly?” No, it was decided. Making a playlist would be as cute as we are! On the night of our first date, Nicole sent Emilio “Ready or Not” by the Fugees as she got in the car to drive to his house (he made her dinner! Huge deal!). Emilio sent back “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas— and he was right. That night was a good night, and the beginning to our greatest adventure!
