Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in the world, with approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats living under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Just before sunset, they emerge in a stunning stream over Lady Bird Lake it’s a uniquely Austin experience and surprisingly beautiful. We recommend arriving early to grab a good viewing spot along the bridge or the trail below.
One of our favorite ways to enjoy Austin is getting out on the water at the Texas Rowing Center. Located on Lady Bird Lake, it’s a great spot to rent paddle boards and take in the skyline, nature, and peaceful views of the city. It’s an easy, fun activity whether you’re looking for something active or just a relaxed way to spend a morning or afternoon.
One of our favorite Texas summer activities is river tubing at Landa Falls in New Braunfels. Floating down the crystal clear Comal River is relaxing, fun, and a perfect way to cool off from the Texas heat. It’s an easy drive from Austin and great for groups just bring sunscreen, drinks, and plan to enjoy a laid-back afternoon on the water.
Just a short drive from downtown Austin, McKinney Falls State Park is a beautiful spot for hiking, swimming, and exploring the outdoors. The park features scenic trails and two limestone waterfalls along Onion Creek, making it a great option for a relaxed morning or afternoon surrounded by nature.
One of the best viewpoints in Austin, the Pennybacker Bridge Overlook offers stunning views of the Colorado River and Hill Country. It’s a short hike to the top and especially beautiful at sunset. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a camera the views are worth it.
One of our favorite moody downtown cocktail spots. Powder Room has a romantic, vintage lounge vibe with incredible craft cocktails perfect for a pre-dinner drink or late-night espresso martini. They offer happy hour every day from 4–6 PM, and phones are locked at the door, creating a totally phone-free experience (which we love). It’s intimate and fills up quickly, so we recommend making a reservation ahead of time.
Texas Keeper Cider is one of our favorite spots for a relaxed drink with a local twist. They serve handcrafted Texas ciders made from locally sourced apples, and the taproom has a laid back, welcoming vibe. It’s a great stop for something a little different than beer or cocktails, especially on a warm Austin afternoon.
Cosmic Saltillo is one of our favorite laid-back spots in Austin. It’s perfect any time of day coffee in the morning, tacos for lunch, or cocktails in the evening. The outdoor space is beautiful and relaxed, making it a great place to gather with friends and enjoy Austin’s easygoing vibe.
Summer House on Music Lane is one of our favorite brunch spots in Austin. It has a bright, fun atmosphere with great food and cocktails perfect for a relaxed weekend brunch with friends. It’s a great stop if you’re spending time downtown or heading out to explore South Congress afterward.
One of our favorite things to do in Austin is simply strolling South Congress. Start at Allen’s Boots to check out classic Texas cowboy boots, then wander the street to explore local shops, murals, and people watching. It’s an easy, fun walk and a great way to experience Austin’s character. Other spots we love along South Congress: Jo’s Coffee – Grab a coffee and snap a photo at the iconic “I Love You So Much” mural. They also have couples dancing on Sunday mornings! Home Slice Pizza – A casual Austin classic if you’re hungry
Zanzibar is a stylish rooftop bar with great views of downtown Austin. It’s a fun spot for cocktails before dinner or a night out, especially around sunset. The vibe is lively but relaxed perfect for enjoying a drink and soaking in the city views.
