Bilbao Airport (BIO)

Bilbao Airport is only 20 minutes by bus or taxi from the city center. It's a very small and convenient airport for travel. The bus from the airport costs 4.50 euros and can be paid in cash or by card (including Apple Pay). Taxis in general cost 30-35 euros from the airport to the city, depending on the final destination. Uber is not very popular or readily available in Bilbao.

If you're interested in exploring more of Spain or the Basque Country while here, you have so many options! For instance, you can check out Madrid for a few days and then make your way to Bilbao. Alternatively, you can explore the French Basque Country, staying in Biarritz, visiting beautiful towns such as Bayonne, Saint Jean de Luz, Hendaye and more. Just a bit higher up on the coast of France is the beautiful city of Bordeaux, where you can try local wines, visit wineries and enjoy the stunning architecture. On your way down to Bilbao (or using Bilbao as a base), stop and check out Hondarribia, San Sebastian/Donosti, Getaria, and more. When in Bilbao, make sure to visit Getxo, go up to see the views of the city from Artxanda, visit the Guggenheim and eat all the pintxos you can manage (all throughout the Basque Country, but we're partial of course to Bilbao's gastronomic offerings). Just an hour in bus from Bilbao you also have the option to explore Vitoria or Santander. Also close by to Bilbao is the world famous region of wine, La Rioja! The region boasts over 500 wineries. Of note is Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, a winery and hotel that was designed by Frank Gehry, the architect responsible for the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. If you decide to stay in an Airbnb or other hotel, our favorite places to stay in Bilbao are Abando (cosmopolitan vibe), Indautxu (lively atmosphere near the stadium), Campo Volantin (near the town hall, residential and calm), and Casco Viejo (historical heart of Bilbao, but more tourists and noise).
