South Bend has a regional airport (SBN). There may not be many direct flights, but connecting flights should be fairly easy to find. :) If you can fly directly to Chicago, O'Hare has multiple flights a day to South Bend! (Midway does not; please use O'Hare airport). The second option is to fly directly to Indianapolis (IND), and drive up to South Bend. The South Bend airport is easy to get to and not far from downtown, hotels, or family!

Train

If you choose to fly directly to Chicago and want to take a train into South Bend, there are two train options into South Bend from Chicago (ORD, O'Hare International Airport). The first is the South Shore. The South Shore leaves from Chicago's Millenium Station and arrives at the South Bend Airport. To get to Millenium Station from O'Hare, take the CTA Blue Line from the airport to Washington-Blue (the loop), then it is a short walk to Millennium Station. The second option is Amtrak, which leaves from Chicago's Grand Central Station and arrives at South Bend's Amtrak station. To get to Chicago's Grand Central Station, also take the CTA Blue Line from the airport to LaSalle, then it is a short walk to Grand Central Station.
