How We Met

COCONUTS AND BOATS ON A TROPICAL ISLAND

People say that we are connected to everything and that each thing we do affects everyone else on earth. This held true in February, 2014. The place was a remote island within the Philippine archipelago, which was recently devastated by a super typhoon. A perpetual bachelor stationed in a US Army base in South Korea arrives. He accepted a last minute invitation from his friend John who intended to visit an old buddy, Alan. They had worked together in Iraq several years prior. Word on Alan's boat building initiative spread out and reached relief operations volunteers in the capital city. A 23-year old working on her master's degree heard of it and instantly signed up. The moment she walked towards the shore, Mike spotted her. Whilst enjoying the "boodle feast" of seafood and rice on banana leaves with locals, they had their first conversation. That evening, they once again crossed paths at a crystal green pool inside a cave. He told her about helicopters and his travels around the world while she shared her plans of climbing Kilimanjaro. She felt intrigued by this stranger unlike anyone before. So foreign, yet familiar. The stars aligned that night, all because of a series of events and decisions that strangers made over time. They have found each other, of all places, in a remote island, among the coconut trees.
