Local Tour

Local Tour

A walking tour is a great way to settle into Lisbon (make sure to bring a good pair of shoes). We used this tour when we visited, but any local tour will do!

Pastéis de Nata

Pastéis de Nata

Pastéis de nata have been a city staple since their invention by some clever monks in the late 19th century. The most famous purveyor is Pastéis de Belém, but we think Manteigaria is Lisbon's greatest treasure.

"The Seven Hills"

"The Seven Hills"

Lisbon's districts are also easily walkable on your own. Some classics: Alfama is the oldest and most characteristically beautiful (and the also hilliest), Bairro Alto is renowned for its bars and tascas, and Baixa and Rossio for their historic landmarks.

Time Out Market

Time Out Market

Lisbon's food hall with everthing -- but especially fresh and tinned seafood, wine, and more pasteis de nata.

LX Factory

LX Factory

Lisbon's hipster neighborhood with art, shopping, theatre, and plenty of bohemians.

Cervejaria Ramiro

Cervejaria Ramiro

Famous for a perfect menu offering an abundance of fresh seafood, followed by an entire steak sandwich for dessert.

Palacio de Pena

Palacio de Pena

Palacio de Pena in Sintra is a fairy-tale castle located at the highest point overlooking the region, which was designed by a King as a whimsical summer home. (Warning: even more hilly than Lisbon proper.)

Cruz Alta

Cruz Alta

The Pena Park's Cruz Alta walking trail weaves through the forest to the highest point in the Serra de Sintra (528 metres), marked with a Manueline-esque stone cross. At this height you can see the Pena Palace's towers and the Sintra mountains, and on clear days you can see Lisbon and the Tagus Estuary.

NMAA, Berardo & MAAT

NMAA, Berardo & MAAT

Roughly in order of historical focus, the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Berardo Collection, and the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology are all favored museums within driving distance (or for the NMAA, walking distance) of downtown Lisbon.

For all the days along the way
