Flight
Kahului airport serves as Maui’s major airport and is centrally located right in the middle of the island. Flying into this airport allows you the convenience to stop at nearby chain-stores, such as Target and Costco (cheapest gas on the island!), as well as pick up your rental car from the airport or take a shuttle service to your hotel. Hint: Across the street from Costco are food trucks with some local favorites!
Travel Note
If you have a Costco membership, check out Costco Travel—they often have great deals and packages. Prices can fluctuate, so it’s worth checking regularly. Booking through Costco Travel allows you to reserve your flight, hotel, and car together, often at a better rate, additional perks, and with fewer hotel fees (i.e. resort or parking fees) than booking separately. High recommend this option!
Rental Car
The easiest way to get around Maui is by rental car. Don't forget to reserve in advance, as availability can be limited by rental company. Again, Costco travel has some great deals so it's worth taking a look. Uber and Lyft also operate on the island for shorter trips. Also, don't forget to fill up your gas at Costco, which has the best prices on the island! Please keep in mind that the island is bigger than you think. So we highly encourage renting a car as getting from the airport in Kahului to Lahaina in West Maui takes about 45 minutes or so. If you’re staying in West Maui, there's options like the Kaanapali Trolley make it simple to reach nearby resorts without moving your car, such as Whaler’s Village and local restaurants. Many hotels also offer shuttle service within the Kaanapali and Kapalua areas.
