Although Ocracoke is a bit of a drive from KDH, it is definitely worth the added travel. Ocracoke is a small island located at the end of the OBX and accessible by the Hatteras Ferry. Ocracoke beaches are relatively untouched and the island was listed as the second best beach in the country!
There are several beach access points with foot showers and paths over the dunes, all of which are accessible to the public. AND since the OBX are actually barrier islands, you are never more than a walk away from the beach. However, if you stay on the sound side of the island you will need to cross a highway to get to the beach side.
People always forget about the Sound-side of the Islands! This area is a favorite for kayaking, parasailing, and jet-skiing, with businesses available for equipment rentals or lessons.
