We met when I (Kali) was a sophomore in high school; he was a freshman. I was friends with his cousin and while we were in the lunch room one day he comes riding up on a scooter to our group and the first thing I thought was “who the heck is this kid?”. After he did that two more times we gave him the nickname ‘Scoota’ for obvious reasons. at first I didn’t think much of him, he was your typical high school boy, immature, stupid and reckless. However I soon noticed that he was also the sweetest, most thoughtful and respectful high schooler I’d ever met. We quickly developed a friendship and we walked each other to class, made sure the other had something to eat and helped each other when our lives became stressful. He was and is my best friend.
Originally, Carter asked me out back in high school. I was a senior and he was a junior at the time, and I gently told him no. He was super respectful and understanding that I felt like we would be better as friends. He didn’t push any further and we kept our friendship for the rest of my senior year. Later I learned he went home to his mom and cried (not really but he did tell her his heart was broken). About a year after I graduated, I noticed a lot of his friends coming and going from church and it got me curious. So I decided to send him a text and we ended up meeting up to hang out. And of course the first thing I notice is his new Mustang, which did impress me. After about a month of hanging out he asked me if he should get back together with his ex that he told me about and my first thought was “Yeah that’s not gonna happen. I’m gonna make sure of that.” And that’s when I knew I liked him as more than a friend. A few days later we met up with his friends on a roof top parking garage after his graduation celebration, and once we left to drop off his childhood friend I ended up holding his hand on the way and the only reason he held my hand is because he thought that’s what I was trying to do. Either way after we dropped off his friend we spent another four hours with each other driving around, doing late night geocaching, and sitting at a beautiful water fountain. When we got back to my house he asked me out and instead of just saying “Yes”, or “I’d like that” the first thing I blurted out was “Are you serious?” (I was a little excited). After reassuring me that he was I accepted his offer and three years later he finally asked another question.
This boy was sneaky. He set up our anniversary date as a photo shoot for a 3 year anniversary. A family friend of his was taking the pictures and her daughter was helping. At first I didn’t think anything of it until mentioned getting my nails and hair done. Then he suggested getting a new dress and I started to put two and two together. I knew he already had the ring but didn’t know what it looked like, and he mentioned one of his friends was keeping it safe (from my snooping eyes). The whole day I got pampered and felt amazing. I was really enjoying myself, relaxing and enjoying spending time with Carter. I kept track of everywhere we went but to my slight disappointment we never stopped at a friend’s. So I thought ‘maybe it’s not today’. We were having our photos taken at Fort Worth Heritage Park so we headed out. Once we met up with Julie (our photographer) we started taking a few base photos and I won’t lie; as a spoiled youngest child, I thrived in the attention I was getting. Eventually we made our way to this little dock the park had and Julie said she wanted to get some solo shots of me. I didn’t think anything of it and while she had me facing towards the bridge, Carter snuck up behind me and got down on one knee. When she told me to turn around it took me a second to realize what was happening. He actually had to ask me twice because I was caught so off guard. Turns out a few days prior on his way home from work he picked up the ring and hid it in his tux. I was filled with emotions and didn’t know how to react at first. I eventually settled on excitement and disbelief. And of course, I said yes. We celebrated at one of our favorite places, Mi Cocina and I called all our friends who said they already knew! It was the smoothest I’d seen Carter be and I still get butterflies when I think about it.
