Washington in winter has some special winter weather considerations to take into account. The road to Mountain Springs Lodge winds sharply and can be icy, so plan your choice of rental car accordingly.
Leavenworth is near the city of Wenatchee, which does have an airport. If you'd like to cut down on car travel during the winter, flying into Wenatchee and renting a car from there will likely be your best option. The drive is approximately an hour.
If you fly into the Seattle-Tacoma airport, you will need to drive through the Snoqualmie Pass, which runs the risk of the pass being closed due to inclement weather, although this is very rare in December. The drive is approximately 2 hours, longer with slowdown from the pass.
Alternatively, you could fly into the Spokane airport and drive from there. Spokane avoids the mountain pass, and much of the drive will be done on ice-free roads. The drive is approximately 3 hours.
