Great ice cream and taverns. (Carrie's family dog Cujo, however, prefers the mini ice cream cones west of town at the Dairy Dock.)
Lewis & Clark State Recreation
A favorite of Carrie's family for biking, running, and swimming. Enjoy Lewis & Clark Lake and the impressive views of birds, the dam, or the chalk stone bluffs. Carrie's family prefers Gavins Point as their favorite swimming beach.
Ben's Brewing Co.
A downtown Yankton staple with great beer, free popcorn, and cocktails upstairs. It's where Carrie and Christopher got drinks following the Rock Garden Tour show that brought them together.
Murdos Aten Resort
Murdos is a fantastic dinner spot on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River where you can enjoy a fried fish on a deck, overlooking the river. This is a great option if you're looking for somewhere to eat on Friday night if you arrive early.
Gavins Point Dam
Hydro-electric fun for the whole family! Plus, you can sometimes spot bald eagles flying overhead.
Dakota Territorial Museum
Yankton was the first capital city of the Dakota Territory. Swing by to learn about Yankton's history and see where Carrie cut her chops as a docent in high school.
History Buffs: Trial of Jack McCall Site
Yankton (as we've mentioned) was the Territorial Capital, and you can see downtown the old federal courthouse where the authorities tried (and convicted) the outlaw Jack McCall for the killing of famous Wild West gunslinger, Wild Bill Hickok, out in Deadwood.
Music Buffs: Lawrence Welk's Big Break!
The old Gurney Building in downtown Yankton holds special meaning for Christopher, as not only did Lawrence Welk broadcast his radio show here over WNAX but the young maestro also here met his future wife, Fern Renner.
Yankton Rock-N-Rumble Motorcycle Rally
Head to historic downtown Yankton for the Rock-n-Rumble Motorcycle Rally. Highlights include the motorcycle parade across the double-decker Meridian Bridge on Saturday. The cycles travel across the lower deck and then return on the upper deck, stopping for aerial photographs. The two-day event includes four bands, two poker runs, the Meridian Bridge parade and food vendors. Events and activities run Friday evening, July 27, and all day on Saturday, July 28.
Fox Run Golf Course
The City of Yankton has a public golf course. My cousin John Wilson has volunteered to organize a golf outing for those enjoy golf and disagree with Mark Twain's assessment that "Golf is a good walk spoiled." Let Carrie know if you want to join John during the golf outing.
