One afternoon in January 2017 when Caroline was "working" at a coffee shop in Brooklyn, she came across Laura's online dating profile on OKCupid. She messaged her, "nice curls," and brought up one of the guilty pleasures Laura had listed on her profile, the televangelist Joel Osteen. Laura was reticent about dating a Caroline, since her sister Julia had just wed her partner Caroline a few months earlier, but she couldn't help replying, and the first date was on the books. They met at Bar Veloce in Chelsea, near Caroline's grad school, School of Visual Arts, and near the apartment where Laura was catsitting for a family friend (esteemed filmmaker Roberta Friedman). The date went well, especially when Caroline told Laura about how her grandma, a Yellow Dog Democrat, had the hots for Bill Clinton. Laura played it cool, of course, while Caroline was a bit overheated in her heavy sweater, but a second date was soon planned and the rest is history.
