Completed in 1939 as one of the New Deal’s Public Works projects, the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum is an architectural jewel built in the ultra-modern style of the time. Caroline's mother, Valerie Hoogland, is a board member and long-time advocate of the museum and its rich history. This circular building is home to 23 beautifully rendered scale dioramas that portray a snapshot of Louisiana life in the 1940s. LSEM’s collection includes Louisiana Native American artifacts, regional and national history artifacts, original works by local artists, and natural history exhibits.
This is a beautifully located, free art museum. Caroline's family grew up going here on "skip days" where their parents would them skip school and do something fun, yet educational. The Norton’s permanent collection is quite extensive, including the works of over 100 artists ... from Renaissance Old Masters, to modernist iconoclasts and contemporary neo-realists. In addition, the museum possesses hundreds of sculptures ranging from miniatures and maquettes to life-size pieces in media including bronze, silver, marble, and wood. Among the oldest works in the Norton are pieces from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Persia and six tapestries dating from the 16th century which once graced the palace of a King of France. Decorative arts are also featured throughout the museum, including works in porcelain, pressed and blown glass, and 18th - 19th century silver.

Caddo Lake is a gem of Louisiana and Texas. Caddo Lake is a 25,400-acre lake and bayou (wetland) on the border between Texas and Louisiana. The lake is named after the Caddoans or Caddo, Native Americans who lived in the area until their expulsion by the United States in the 19th century. The US forced most of them to move west to Indian Territory. The lake and bayou comprise an internationally protected wetland under the Ramsar Convention and includes one of the largest flooded cypress forests in the United States. It is the second-largest lake in the South. This lake is truly a marvel. Brendan and Caroline have spent lots of time exploring its beauty. Plan in advance because it is an hour drive, but WOW so worth it. You can rent kayaks, find boat tours, or canoe the lake.

Our favorite spot for cajun food. The vibe is more of a lunch spot. Brendan makes us go here EVERY TIME we are in town (which is a lot). We love this spot. It is super laid back. If you see a blonde woman working the counter, her name is Elise. She is lovely!

Historic and nostalgic seafood restaurant located in the West End of Shreveport, LA. Family owned and operated since 1936 serving Creole and Cajun fare, and creating the world famous Shrimp Buster in 1945. Their menu includes crawfish etouffee, gumbos, hand battered onion rings, sauteed catfish and oysters on the half shell. Herber Busi (Herby K) started a great spot, and we've kept the hospitality, high quality ingredients and recipes going since the start. This local favorite is a great place to make memories with the family, bring dates, celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and promotions at work. Most locals will tell you...if you're looking for somewhere that is quintessentially Shreveport, you gotta go by Herby-K's. NOTE: This is in an very old part of town, we recommend going for lunch.
