The Wedding Website of Caroline Mills and Adam Smith
Below are a few local spots I cherish from my childhood. Outdoor sculpture gardens, a castle on the beach. Restaurant/bar recommendations. Etc.
Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens

Murrells Inlet, SC 29576

Brookgreen Gardens is a unique melding of art, nature, and history. Since its founding in 1931, by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, Brookgreen has been a cultural center for our community. From its inception, Brookgreen had a three-pronged purpose: first, to collect, exhibit, and preserve American figurative sculpture; second, to collect, exhibit, and preserve the plants of the Southeast; and third, to collect, exhibit, and preserve the animals of the Southeast. Collecting and exhibiting, it became the first public sculpture garden in America. Today it is the finest outdoor museum of its type in the world. (source: Robin R. Atalaya Castle

Atalaya Castle

Atalaya Road, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576

The history of Atalaya Castle in Murrells Inlet SC is a little known outside of the state but weaves a fascinating story of art and philanthropy during the Great Depression. Atalaya Castle was built by Archer Huntington and his wife Anna between 1931 and 1933. Archer was a philanthropist from New York City and designed the house to be a winter residence for him and his wife after she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He designed the plans himself based on Spanish or Moorish architecture coupled with his own imagination. Anna, who was an artist and sculptor, did her part as well and designed the wrought iron grills that serve as hurricane protection on all the windows.

DeBordieu

DeBordieu

SC 29440

DeBordieu Colony is one of the oldest beachside communities on the East Coast. It’s a unique blend of wildlife, beach, and beautiful family homes. According to local legend, the name “DeBordieu” was given to this area by the Marquis de Lafayette. After navigating secretly for 54 days in order to avoid being captured by the British fleet, Lafayette landed his ship Victory on June 13, 1777, and exclaimed, “This land is so beautiful, it must be the borderland of God! (D’aborde Dieu).” Our southern pronunciation “Debidue” comes from the local Gullah dialect. Some 400 years have not diminished the beauty that LaFayette found so captivating. With only 1,220 homesites on 2,700 acres, and hundreds of acres established as a wildlife preserve, DeBordieu Colony will delight residents and guests for generations to come.
