Question

How do I get from Guatemala to Antigua?

Answer

We are working with Antigua Tours for Shuttles to get you from the airport to Antigua and Antigua to the airport. Round trip shuttles come out to $45 per person, each way separately $25 per person. Hotels also offer their own car services. You can directly reach out to compare pricing.

Question

What's the best way to get around Guatemala

Answer

The City of Antigua is about 1 hour away from Guatemala City and the airport. Lake Atitlan is about 3 hours ways from the airport. We recommend you book the shuttle services from the travel agency we are working with. Check the travel section for details. Also hotels have private car service and there is taxi or Uber available in Guatemala. Once you are in Antigua you don't need a car, the city is pretty walkable and there are plenty of transportation options. While in Antigua you will also see a great deal of small motorized, sputtering, three-wheeled taxis called Tuk-Tuks. They are typically cheaper than a conventional taxi and quicker if there is traffic, but it is a bumpy ride! Tuk-tuks offer a safe, fun and authentic travel experience and are a good way to travel short distances.

Question

How walkable is Antigua, Guatemala?

Answer

Very walkable! This is a small charming old city. You can walk to all of our events from the recommended hotels.

Question

What will the weather be like?

Answer

Guatemala is the Land of the Eternal Spring. Antigua generally has sunny and beautiful weather averaging 65-75 degrees F during the daytime and dropping to 55-60 degrees F at night. We recommend packing a light jacket. We will be there during the the rainy season so bring an umbrella and rain jacket! Humidity is generally not an issue, it is comparable to New York City in the Spring time/Fall. Antigua sits at 5000ft above sea level so your ears may pop as you adjust this higher elevation.

Question

Is it safe there?

Answer

Yes, Antigua is the safest city in Guatemala. Tourism is the main economic driver so they are highly incentivized to keep order and impose heavy punishments for misdemeanors. That being said, please be mindful of your surroundings if you are out after dark. You will want to be cautious if you're outside of Antigua or other main tourist areas. The main tourists areas such as Antigua, Lake Atitlan, Tikal are generally safe. Guatemala City is divided in Zonas, some are safe and some are very dangerous. Do your research online before going anywhere and always be aware of pickpocking. While we do not recommend staying in the capital, if you have to spend a night in Guatemala City we recommend to stay in the Ciudad Cayala area.

Question

What kind of shoes should/shouldn't I wear?

Answer

Do not wear stilettos. Antigua has cobblestone streets so it's best to block or wedged heels. It's recommended to wear comfortable shoes as you walk around and explore the city.

Question

Are kids welcome?

Answer

Yes, we love your little ones. Just let us know in the notes of your RSVP and we can be sure to accommodate babies and children (13+ are considered adults). Our reception venue has two houses within the venue with beds available for any sleepy children. We will have them set up with babysitters so the kids can have their own party and you can enjoy the wedding! Question

Day of the wedding logistics

Answer

The Ceremony, Cocktail hour and Wedding Reception are all taking place at different venues. See the schedule section for complete details: -Catholic Church Ceremony: Iglesia La Merced at 12pm -Cocktail Hour: Ruinas de Santa Teresa at 1:30pm -Wedding Reception: Casa de la Ruina at 4:30pm

Question

Do I need to know Spanish to get around?

Answer

It's helpful, but not necessary within Antigua and Lake Atitlan. There's a large expat community and you can usually find English speakers, however please be patient as they'll likely start with Spanish and adjust once they realize you speak English.

Question

What currency is accepted in Guatemala?

Answer

Guatemalan Quetzales. At the airport and within the city of Antigua & Guatemala City, you can use your credit card for restaurants, hotels, cafes, ticket booths, Uber, etc. You may want Quetzales on hand if you buy souvenirs or food from street vendors, otherwise you can pretty much rely on your credit card. We do not recommend exchanging USD at the airport as those are not the best rates. If you want to exchange in the US before leaving, I recommend exchanging through your Bank, I usually get a good rate from Bank of America. There is also a Banco Industrial ATM right by the Parque Central area, we took out some additional cash there at a decent exchange rate. Some stablishments accept dollars too, just make sure they offer you a good exchange rate. Around 7.8 is acceptable

Question

What is the culture like in Antigua?

Answer

Guatemalans are warm, welcoming and hospitable, valuing connection to family & friends. The coffee culture is strong and people love to get together with people for a cup of coffee and some pan (Guatemalan bread)

Question

What is the tipping etiquette?

Answer

10-12% on top of your bill is customary. I noticed some places in the tourists areas automatically add it. Gratuity is polite at all restaurants. For bellhops, maids, and tour guides, tips are customary as a reward for good service.

Question

Should I drink tap water?

Answer

We highly recommend only drinking bottled water.

Question

What are the bride and groom's plans before the wedding weekend?

Answer

We are planning to be in Lake Atitlan from Saturday, July 27 to Monday, July 29. We have secured a hotel block at the Hotel Porta del Lago if you would like to extend your vacation and get to know another area of Antigua. Go to the Travel section for addtional details. From there we are planning to be in Antigua until Monday, August 5. We would love to hear about everyone's vacation plans, and may even pop in to join you so please let us know if you're staying in Guatemala.

Question

Whom should I call with questions?

Answer

We would be happy to help with your travel questions as you plan your trip. Make sure to add Carol (201-606-5861) & Victor (732-921-0080) on WhatsApp to be able to communicate in Guatemala.

Question

Drinking Laws in Guatemala

Answer

The legal drinking age in Guatemala is 18. Everything from beer to hard spirits is sold in specific liquor stores, as well almost supermarkets and even convenience stores. You will also see bottles listed on many restaurant menus. That's right! You can buy a whole bottle of liquor at a restaurant and pay very close to the actual price! This a great option when dining with a group.

Question

Will I need a converter/adaptor for electricity?

Answer

No. Guatemala uses 110 volt, 60 cycle electricity, same as the US. Plugs are typically the 2 pronged flat type so US travelers will not typically need a converter or adapter.
