The Proposal

12.25.21

What an exciting day this was! Let’s start from the beginning as now, we can now look back and laugh at these moments. I wake up. It’s Christmas morning in Puerto Rico and I’m thrilled to be sharing this experience with Christiaan. It’s his first time on the island and we just spent the night before with some family at my Aunt Chely’s house. Christiaan, knowing he was proposing the next day and as nervous as could be, was awfully hungover and just didn’t wake up on the right side of the bed. He had a whole agenda planned for the day, including breakfast in the morning with the parents and some sight-seeing before visiting the grandparents. It took him awhile to get moving to get amped up for the day, but as we were leaving the room we both promised to have an awesome day together. We met my parents at a local breakfast spot in Isla Verde, Sobao. I have been looking forward to this breakfast for quite some time…eating some revoltillo with pan sobao, a hot cup of café, and a couple spoonful’s of avena. After we finished our yummy meal, we are off to our adventure in showing Christiaan the beauty of PR. We show him the coast along Isla Verde into Old San Juan. He was fascinated looking at the forts and all the colorful buildings inland. I noticed my dad was trying to find a parking spot which wasn’t a part of the plan. One guy was reserving a spot, conveniently open for my dad to park. I later found out this was planned! I thought we were just staying in the car - mind you – I’m in a boot and can’t surpass 7,000 steps. I then think, holy shit, is this the moment?! I start sweating profusely. We get out of the car and started walking around, posing for pictures in front of monumental buildings or wall art. I then realized we were walking towards the place where all the pigeons were, the alley of death. I’ve been pooped on by a pigeon in a past visit around Old San Juan, so yes, I hate birds. My mom thought this would be a great location to take photos (and get proposed to), but I quickly cancelled this request and told them to keep walking. As we continued on our walk, we stopped at a location where it looked over the San Juan Bay and some fort walls. The scenery was beautiful – think of clear blue skies, few white clouds, around 80 degrees (even though I was sweating like a pig), and green foliage with palm trees swaying in the air. As I’m looking at the reflection of the bay, Christiaan gets down on one knee! I blackout and just see his beautiful smile and his sunglasses looking straight up at me. My dad busts out his camera and mom has her phone ready to record. All I can think about is how I have envisioned this in my life and the man of my dreams is proposing in real life! I kiss him and he asks me to marry him. I said, “absolutely yes!” This moment was so surreal. Best Christmas present ever.
