Two words: Family & Roots For Stalin: My hometown is 170 miles from Puerto Escondido or "Puerto" as it is called locally. Families from our town frequently visit Puerto as a nice beach getaway, and mine was no different, growing up it was a household name. Aside from visits when I was a child, I also lived in Puerto for 5 months during COVID, it is my happy place, I have friends who live there (including our master mixologist who will plying his trade at our event), and last but not least, it was a place I knew my family from my hometown would be able to travel to, including and especially the matriarch of my family, who will be 86 years young when the wedding happens. For Dasha: I first visited Puerto with Stalin in December of 2024 and fell in love with the place. The weather, the water, the beach, and the fresh delicious seafood make this truly a special place. Travelwise, it's also easier for my family to visit Mexico, so when Stalin proposed this as the location, it was a no brainer.
Puerto Escondido ("Hidden Port" in Spanish) is a small beach town in the state of Oaxaca, which lies on the warm pacific ocean and has been a hidden gem for several decades. It had been slowly gaining notoriety until recently, when it exploded in the last 5 years due to instagram and tiktok, it has now gained significant worldwide exposure. Investors have flocked to capitalize on it and as such recent large infrastructure improvements are in progress, Puerto Escondido airport is one of the fastest growing airports in the country. Also, mid November weather averages lows of 72F and highs of 84F, rains one day on average in the month, moderate humidity, and sunset at 5:45pm. With the ceremony set to start at 5pm, and the venue location including a beach, we certainly wanted warm, dry, and sunny.
There's no uber/lyft in Puerto Escondido, everything is taxis and they mostly only take mexican pesos so we recommend having cash on hand for taxis. Average taxi cost is about $200 MXN (about $10 USD). As for walking around, there will be many people walking around the main parts of the town such as Zicatela and La Punta. Walking is recommended for short distances but taxis are recommended for anything else. Moving from your hotel to Zicatela/La Punta/ the beaches should be in taxi.
It's recommended to have at least 100 USD worth of MXN, about 2000 pesos, for your taxi rides which usually run between 50-200 MXN a ride ($2.50 to $10 USD a ride). For bars, restaurants, and anything else, cards are generally accepted everywhere although they might take a little bit to run the charge if the wifi/internet is acting up.
This is a beach town, as such, the seafood is fresh. Tuna tostadas are a crowd favorite but it's hard to go wrong with any seafood.
We strongly advise not to drink water from the tap/sink. Always get bottled water, it's just easier to play it safe as your gut biome might not play nice with the local water.
