Cara and Christian met at their church's small group Bible study. Christian had just finished his DPhil at Oxford and moved from the UK to Texas. Cara had recently broken up and had sworn off dating for a year (apparently she wasn't serious). Their first conversation mainly involved trading academic bonafides and discussing their time as American grad students in Britain - Cara got her masters from University of Leicester. Over the next few weeks, they talked about theology and whiskey and their favorite kinds of biscuits (Cara likes dark chocolate HobNobs and Christian prefers Biscoff).

We went to Monkey Nest Coffee on a Monday. There was a sudden cold front, and it was high pandemic times still, so the instant we walked in, both our glasses fogged up because of the masks and neither of us could read a word of the menu. Just Nerd Couple things.

Christian suggested a picnic in the park, which caused Cara to be mildly suspicious of momentous events transpiring. They set up their blanket and food on a gorgeous, balmy day, and then Christian said: "I need to go get dessert from the car." He returned with a massive white box under one arm and Cara briefly thought he had brought a whole cake to a park. He knelt down and opened the box, where twelve Tiny Pies from a local Austin bakery spelled out "Marry Me?" (No, the ring was not in a pie. It was very happily shining alone in the second, much smaller, box he opened.)
