How We Met

March 2, 2018

We met at a lesbian bar in Durham (Arcana) at a Latin dance party event. Neither of us were there to dance, neither of us were interested in changing our single status, and Camille had this subjectively silly concept that she would never meet the type of person she wants to be with at a bar.. Edgar had gone to celebrate a friend's birthday, and Camille was there to celebrate a different birthday. They caught each other's eye early on in the night and, as Edgar tells the story, Camille "harassed him" with her eyes all night. After Edgar left, Camille annoyed her friend as she argued with herself if she should have approached him or let him do all the work (which, clearly, he had not done). Turns out Edgar had not left, he was just outside the bar. When he came back down to close his tab (something he never does unless they have his card because "they will automatically apply the tip and close it for me"), Camille's friend grabbed him then grabbed Camille, pushing them together on the dance floor. The DJ was packing up and the dance floor was mostly empty. Camille couldn't hear anything Edgar said.. a happy combination of her being hard of hearing and Edgar being a quiet guy. She kept watching his lips to try to understand what he was saying. Edgar claims she was sending him a message and he kissed her! She didn't even know his name yet. Camille gave Edgar her number, typing it into his phone herself and not messaging or calling herself so it would be top of his recent exchanges. Camille spent the next 12+ hours in turmoil not hearing from Edgar. Later on she learned that he couldn't remember her name and texted some other girls saved in his phone by first names only before finding her.

Our First Date

March 9, 2018

After discovering that they both lived in Cary, Edgar and Camille agreed to meet at Spirits for a drink since Spirits had the only gluten-free beer offered in those days (shout out to Omission) and stereotyped that as a Latino, Edgar only drank Corona or some other available-at-any-bar light beer. How wrong she was.. After having a fun time at Spirits, they decided to keep the date going. They headed to Slim's in downtown Raleigh, where Edgar walked up to the bar and put his hand on a black woman's Afro, which gave Camille pause as to how well the date was actually going. Thankfully, the woman gave Edgar a big hug. On the night of their first date, Edgar introduced Camille to his closest friends even though they apparently did not know about the existence of his last girlfriend who he dated for over a year. Only later did Camille understand the significance of this moment. After some live music at Slim's, they headed to Neptunes for a basement hip hop dance party. This is notable as it is the only time Edgar has ever danced with Camille, which she is still grumpy about being false advertising of their relationship. Once everything closed down at 2am and not wanting to end their first date yet, they went to the cell phone lot at the airport to chat more and eventually take a nap in the trunk of Edgar's hatchback Mazda. Later, as the sun was set to rise, they went to the Sri Venkateswara Temple, a Hindu temple of beautiful architecture, which Camille thought Edgar would love since he had an interest in world religions and had studied architecture. The date only ended after 8am because Camille had to be somewhere later that morning.

The Proposal, part 1

May 24, 2023

Camille was in the Netherlands cleaning out the home of her aunt Marianka who had recently passed. Marianka was the keeper of all Wanninkhof family heirlooms left behind from Grandma Betty. Camille came across a jewelry box where she found a simple, beautiful ring. She sent a photo of it to Edgar saying "From 1830, you don’t have to buy me an engagement ring! Just need to resize. It's so beautiful." After hours passed and Edgar hadn't read the message, Camille followed up with a simple "Babe!" text, to which Edgar responded with an emoji only 👀. After further prompting from Camille, Edgar said "Ok babe get it." Camille brought the ring home, where it sat in the same jewelry box for over a year..

The proposal, part 2

December 2024

At some point, Edgar and Camille had a conversation about whether it was time to have a wedding. They decided it was and brought to the ring to Camille's former coworker, Tara Mattia, at Virtuoso in Apex. It turns out the ring was too old and thin to safely resize, so Tara polished it up, put a spacer on so it, and they walked out into the night "engaged."
