Joseph and I met in our college Scuba Diving class when we were sophomores. My parents had always encouraged me to take scuba while I was in school, so I finally signed up, and by complete coincidence, I ended up in the same class as my now Maid‑of‑Honor, Sierra, her fiancé, Jonathan, and my friend Anja from architecture. On the first day, Sierra whispered, “Callie, there’s a guy in here who is exactly your type. He looks just like Jon Snow.” I had no idea who she meant because, honestly, all the guys looked a little strange in scuba gear. Then she told me to look up. I did, and from that moment on, I was a goner. It took a couple of weeks of me flopping around during the butterfly stroke (Joseph’s specialty), awkward conversations, and Sierra doing some light background checks before I finally worked up the courage to ask him to dinner and to take the scuba final with me. Our scuba group decided to test him by taking him to Gosh, an Ethiopian restaurant, to see if he was picky. Thankfully, Joseph will eat anything and everything. Later that night, back at my dorm, I was so nervous I couldn’t even finish the scuba test, and he had to help me, which, if you know me, is wildly out of character. Somehow, despite all that, he still asked for my number. Sierra swears my body language was so bad, if she were him, she would’ve never spoken to me again, but Joseph, for some reason, wasn’t dissuaded. The next weekend was Halloween, my favorite holiday in existence. Joseph and I had been texting nonstop, and even though he had scuba checkouts that weekend, he invited me to a Woodlands Halloween party. I dragged Sierra and Jonathan with me, made them drive in circles while I took one last shot of tequila for courage, and finally walked up the stairs. One of his friends spotted me and ran to get him. Joseph introduced me to everyone, including his brothers, he offered me jungle juice (I declined), and then ditched his own party to follow me to the next one. We may or may not have stayed out until 3 a.m., which you are absolutely not supposed to do before scuba diving. The following night, my friends and I were going out again for the rest of Halloweekend (yes, it’s a full‑weekend event), and Joseph canceled a Zach Bryan concert to join us. He met all my architecture friends as I led a group of twenty around downtown Knoxville. That night, I signed his T‑shirt with the biggest John Hancock imaginable, my subtle way of marking my territory, and we held hands for the first time. He gave nothing but green flags the entire night. From there, everything blossomed. We became part of each other’s friend groups, met each other’s families far too soon, and quickly became woven into each other’s lives. We have had the joy of experiencing many camping trips, nights out, scuba excursions in the Caribbean, and so much more. I knew early on that he was everything I had ever hoped for. Joseph is patient, kind, steady, and loves me more deeply than I ever imagined someone could. I feel unbelievably lucky to have found him, and I will love him for the rest of my life. I’m grateful every day for the joy, comfort, and adventure he brings into my world. I cannot wait to see what our life has in store. From working on renovating our 100-year-old cottage, to scuba adventures to come, and many more memories to come, I am looking forward to this next chapter and thank God every day that He brought Joseph into my life. * * *
