After competing for the title of Miss WCU, Molly and her friends went to watch the Mr. WCU "pageant." David was a contestant that year, and he caught Molly's eye when he sang and played the piano and so charmingly articulated his qualifications and campus involvement. A few weeks later, Molly's sorority and David's fraternity had a social, and after working up some courage, Molly approached David to tell him how impressive he was in Mr. WCU. David looked at her like she had five heads, so Molly quickly turned and ran away. David leaned over to his friend and said, "I think I just met the president of my fan club." Fast forward a year later in 2014 when Molly was competing for Miss WCU for her third and final time. David and a friend were there in the audience to support a friend who was competing, and this time, Molly caught David's eye. After she won, pictures of her were displayed all around campus, and David couldn't get her out of his head! He knew he had class with a girl in Molly's sorority (who just so happened to be one of her roommates, too, unbeknownst to David!), so he reached out and invited them and their friends to a party his fraternity was having. David and Molly met, again, and David asked Molly to go on a date to get frozen yogurt at Kiwi. Molly was oblivious and didn't think it was a date, so she carried her backpack into town as they walked to Kiwi. They hit it off, and they've been together ever since!
Molly had just gotten over the flu, had just wrapped up musical season at Henderson High School and had a lot going on, so David came home from work on a Friday and surprised her with flowers and a massage scheduled for the same morning she was coincidentally going to get her nails done with his two sisters Kathryn and Theresa (Do you see where this is going?). After spending a relaxing morning on March 24, 2019, Molly arrived home to find a beautifully written note from David in which he instructed her to get dressed up and ready by a certain time because their friend, Steve, was going to be picking her up. Steve arrived and drove Molly to WCU's campus where David was waiting in front of the big castle building where Molly and David first laid eyes on each other. He got down on one knee and popped the question! David's sister Kathryn's best friend Erika was hiding in the bushes capturing the moment on camera (and she had just given birth days before!). The three of them walked into town to Barnaby's where David and Molly's families were all waiting to surprise Molly and celebrate the newly engaged couple. It was an incredibly special day!
