Their relationship began in 2017 at the college group at World Outreach Church in Murfreesboro, TN. Caitlyn was looking for a Bible study group to connect with fellow believers her own age. Nic was playing bass in the college band at the time as well as running lighting and sound during Pastor Caleb's messages, so Caitlyn noticed him straight away as she always had a thing for musicians. Nic noticed Caitlyn in the college group, but he never could tell if she was around his age or not and he didn’t want to scare away the new girl if she was in fact younger than him. Because Nic was always working at the church, and because Caitlyn is not the most outgoing, they never really had the opportunity to talk much or get to know each other initially. Only once did their friend groups get together. They had their first conversation at a Chuy's over dinner, but that was it. It would be almost a year before their next conversation. Caitlyn and Nic had four brief conversations over another two-year span; one at a Burger Republic, where they ran into each other at a trivia night and sat in back-to-back booths. The next three times were at church. At different times they were both fishing for interest, but no one was biting. One of their first conversations took Caitlyn by surprise. Surprised because she couldn’t believe he would sit down and talk to her, but also because her hand was immersed in a Cheeto bag and her fingers were covered in cheese. Fearful of removing her hand and in turn exposing her orange fingers, she said little and kept her hand in the bag. By 2020 they had both aged out of the college group, so they only saw each other passing in the church halls on Sunday mornings. It was in the midst of covid, where meeting people became more difficult, when they both tried different dating apps on and off. Finally, in the spring of 2021, they landed on the same app and matched up with each other. Caitlyn saw Nic’s profile pop up and she messaged him first by poking fun at the fact that he was on a dating app when their church was so big. He responded and without hesitating, asked her out to dinner at BJ’s Brewhouse, one of her favorite places. There were several more dates and many conversations to follow in the few weeks after. About a month later, stuck in the local bowling alley during a tornado watch, Nic asked Caitlyn to be his girl, and she said yes.
