Indianapolis is home to the world’s largest single day sporting event in the world: The Indy 500! Maybe you’ve heard of it?! While race day is in May, you can still visit the track any time of year to see the IMS museum, take a guided tour of the speedway, and even take a lap or two around the track. While you’re out and about in the town of Speedway, don’t forget to stop by Main Street (across the street from the track) to get a beer at Daredevil, a bite at Big Woods, or get more racing action in at Speedway Indoor Karting (sikindy.com).
Take a trip downtown to drive the circle around the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Go for a peaceful walk along the Canal to take in a beautiful skyline view and enjoy White River State Park. Go shopping at Circle Center Mall or dine at a delicious local Indy restaurant like St. Elmo’s or Harry & Izzy’s. Venture over to Massachusetts Avenue for live music, unique restaurants, and exciting bar nightlife.
If you’re looking for all the action in Downtown Indianapolis, Bottleworks is it! This newly opened area at the very end of Mass Ave has something for everyone. We especially love the Garage Food Hall, which is basically a giant cafeteria offering a ton of different food options. Our favorite is La Chinita Poblana! There is also a boutique hotel & spa, cute gift shops, a bowling alley, and upscale movie theater in this area.
This is where Jordan and Caitlin currently call home! Take a stroll through the village to browse eclectic shops, try to choose where to eat from a wide variety of unique restaurants, have a drink at a lively local bar, and settle in for some great people watching! We highly recommend Condado Tacos, Union Jack Pub, and Bric’s Ice Cream!
Jordan and Caitlin love it here! Located about 5 miles east of downtown, Irvington is the largest protected historic district in Indianapolis. With all that history comes a lot of spookiness too! If you’re looking for some Halloween fun the weekend of the wedding, Irvington should be your first stop! Every October, Irvington transforms into a massive Halloween town to celebrate the annual Halloween fest! There is even a haunted historical ghost tour offered each weekend in October which is a frighteningly good time!! This area is also home to lots of unique shops, restaurants, bars, and breweries. We highly recommend stopping by Hampton Designs and Landlocked Baking Co. Yum!
Only a mile and a half from downtown Indianapolis, Fountain Square is a quirky part of town known for its arts, live music, and fun restaurants and bars. In the center of the square is a super cool historical theater where you can stop in for some duck pin bowing upstairs! We also highly recommend stopping by La Margarita for some tacos and margs!
Indianapolis also has bragging rights for the worlds largest children’s museum! If you’re traveling with the fam (or even if you’re not), visiting the children’s museum makes for a super fun-filled day!
If you are getting to Indy with a little extra time to kill and want to go on a day trip adventure that is unlike any other, we highly recommend the Exotic Feline Rescue Center! The center provides permanent homes for exotic felines that have been abused, abandoned, or need somewhere to live out their life in peace. It is about an hour and 15min drive southwest of Indianapolis. Check their website to see available times to tour.
