The entire span of San Juan Island is 55-square-miles and is filled with adventure from historical lighthouses to beautiful farms to dreamy gardens and whimsical beaches. Downtown Friday Harbor is situated at the very entrance of the island's ferry landing and is a true walker's paradise - complete with epic views, sweet boutiques and yummy bites, plus only 5 minutes from Saltwater Farm! We recommend grabbing sandwiches at Spring Street Deli or fish and chips from The Bait Shop and taking them down to the water for a picnic...and if there's a wait, maybe pop next door into either Griffin Bay Bookstore to peruse the shelves or to Friday Harbor Chocolates for a port and chocolate tasting! And if you're in need of groceries, Kings Market is just across the street.
We'll be at the tail end (no pun intended) of peak whale watching season! The San Juan Islands are also referred to as "the Orcas" for good reason. So, if you're feeling adventurous, book a sea life tour. There are multiple companies on the island to take you around! A few recs as follows: ••• San Juan Excursions: https://www.watchwhales.com/ ••• San Juan Safaris: https://www.sanjuansafaris.com/ ••• Crystal Seas Kayaking: https://www.crystalseas.com/ ••• Discover Sea Kayaks: https://discoveryseakayak.com/ ••• Outdoor Odysseys Sea Kayaking: https://www.outdoorodysseys.com/
What better way to explore San Juan Island than by bike?! Discovery Adventure Tours also offers kayak rentals, but in the event you don't have your sea legs just yet or just are weary to risk seasickness on this trip 🥴 we highly recommend swooping some e-bikes and zooming around the island, or better yet, do double duty and get that extra workout in with a standard bike rental! 😅
Located on the opposite side of the island from Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor is just 20 minutes away. From hikes to fabulous dining options and accommodations, there are many gems to stumble upon. And how incredibly versatile their ultra soft fur can be! In the meantime, check them out at their Instagram @krystal_acres_alpaca_farm - all you'll need is to see one picture of these babies to fall in love 🥹
This local brewery is tucked just along the edge of Downtown Friday Harbor, brewing seasonal beers that you can enjoy on their quaint patio with some yummy bites. Perfect for a sunny day! ☀️
For anyone who's able to extend their stay, we highly recommend island hopping 💕 LOPEZ ISLAND: Known as "the friendly isle" this is the first island we visited and fell in love with! The Kauai of the San Juan Islands. People wave to you from their cars and there are hidden "private" beaches sprinkled around the island that is a cozy enclave with farm-to-table restaurants, coffee shops, tap rooms, art galleries, historical museums and more. ORCAS ISLAND: Known as "the emerald isle" is 57 square miles of curving rural roads, stunning shoreline and is known for its many hikes, cafés and restaurants serving local harvest. Also home to our favorite Buck Bay Shellfish Farm - https://buckbayshellfishfarm.com/ 🦞😋
