Though we both attended Howard University and overlapped for two years, it took us 10 years and a dating app to finally meet each other. Once we connected online, we exchanged a number of messages and spoke on the phone a few times before our first date on October 26, 2017. Bukky was running late so Howard had time to stop into a used bookstore across the street from the restaurant. Once Bukky arrived, Howard had saved her seat with three books: - Rich Dad, Poor Dad: a classic book on financial literacy - I Am Not Your Negro: based on James Baldwin's unfinished manuscripts which inspired a documentary of the same name - Ain't I a Woman: a foundational text on the history of black feminism Needless to say, Howard's choice of literature sparked deep, thoughtful conversation on a number of topics not typically discussed on a first date. In keeping with our first conversation, our relationship has never been surface level. We quickly found that though we came from different backgrounds, we share similar values. The months since have been filled with lots of laughs and love. Fast forward to 1 year and 1 week later, Howard proposed to Bukky at his apartment after a memorable day spent wine tasting in Napa and at a dinner party with friends. Our wedding will be exactly two years after our first date.
