A lively downtown business area, the Historic District is known for its 18th- and 19th-century architecture, including the 1770s Burgwin-Wright Museum and Gardens and the antebellum Bellamy Mansion. The domed Spanish baroque-style Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary has colorful stained glass. Elsewhere, the Riverwalk follows the bank of the Cape Fear River, while hip brewpubs and global eateries pack nearby streets.
USS North Carolina (BB-55) is the lead ship of the North Carolina class of fast battleships, the first vessel of the type built for the United States Navy. Stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in 1960, the ship was saved from the breaker's yard by a campaign to preserve the vessel as a museum ship in her namesake state. In 1962, the North Carolina museum was opened in Wilmington, North Carolina.
