Fort Worth's top attraction, no visit to Cowtown is complete without a trip to the historic Fort Worth Stockyards! Featuring a vast array of shopping, restaurants, bars, and dance halls in an iconic and treasured landmark of Texas history that celebrate's Fort Worth's cowboy and western frontier heritage, there's fun for everyone here!
The Kimbell Art Museum offers a world class art collection, and the iconic beautiful architecture and natural lighting of the Louis I. Kahn building has global recognition. Best of all, admission to the museum's permanent art collection is free! (Special seasonal and traveling exhibits require paid admission, see website for details.)
The heart and soul of downtown Fort Worth, Sundance Square offers a variety of great restaurants and shopping surrounding a grand plaza with fountains and frequent live music events. (Suggestion: If staying in North Richland Hills or North Loop 820 area, you can take a westbound TEXRail train from Iron Horse Station in NRH to Fort Worth Central Station to access this and other downtown Fort Worth attractions.)
Located in the heart of downtown Fort Worth, the Water Gardens offer a beautiful and relaxing oasis of calm in the middle of the city, and it is free to the public! (Suggestion: If staying in North Richland Hills or North Loop 820 area, you can take a westbound TEXRail train from Iron Horse Station in NRH to T&P Station to access this and other downtown Fort Worth attractions.)
Beautiful and peaceful nature reserve located ten miles from downtown Fort Worth, and featuring 20 miles of hiking trails. Definitely worth a visit if you love the great outdoors! Normal admission is $6 for adults, discounted rates for children, seniors, and military (w/ID).
One of our personal favorite recommendations! Historic Main Street district lined with shops, restaurants, and easy access to nearby attractions including Harvest Hall, the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, Grapevine Mills, Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center, and Great Wolf Lodge. Pro-Tip: If staying in North Richland Hills or N Fort Worth area, just hop on an eastbound TEXRail commuter train from Iron Horse Station in NRH - it'll drop you off right in downtown Grapevine at the Main Street Station. A free shuttle connects to nearby Grapevine Mills Mall.
Looking for a fun way to get to the historic Fort Worth Stockyards? Travel there in style on a vintage train! The Grapevine Vintage Railroad offers weekend (including Sunday) heritage train excursions between Grapevine and the Fort Worth Stockyards, and the train drops you off right in the heart of it all at the Stockyards Station! See website for details and tickets.
Another one of our favorite "go-to" places! Large shopping mall with over 200 stores, a food court, and attractions including Rainforest Cafe, Round 1 Bowling & Arcade, SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium, Legoland Discovery Center, and the AMC Grapevine Mills 24 movie theater.
Another one of our favorite places to hang out and window shop, Southlake Town Square is a great place to walk around, explore shops, people watch, and enjoy the elegant water fountains on the main plaza areas. Also features a two-story Barnes & Noble, plenty of great dining options including The Cheesecake Factory, and a movie-bowling-arcade game entertainment center. And if all that wasn't enough for you, the largest H-E-B Central Market store in DFW is located just across from Southlake Town Square on the other side of Southlake Blvd, surrounded by more shopping and restaurants. And just a short drive east along Southlake Blvd offers access to still more great dining (including another favorite - Thailicious Cuisine and Bar) and shopping (including Costco). Lastly, we would be remiss if we didn't also mention the "Activate" game activity center located on E Southlake Blvd - a perfect fun and physical group activity, bring your running shoes, water bottle, and a face towel!
Another one of our favorite places to walk around, window shop, and just spend time together. A great "low-key" alternative to some of the more touristy options listed above, closer than Grapevine Mills, and it's a very large and nice mall surrounded by lots of additional great shopping and restaurants. This mall also features a top notch Cinemark XD movie theater with luxury loungers if you want to catch a showing. The nearby Barnes & Noble bookstore is also one of our favorite go-to "chill" spots to hangout and stick our heads in a book or magazine.
Explore downtown Roanoke, TX, a charming small town located roughly 25 minutes north of downtown Fort Worth (or about 10 minutes north of Keller). Featuring shops and restaurants, including Hard Eight BBQ (which we personally recommend for a great BBQ fix!) and the OG Babe's Chicken Dinner House...and if you don't know about Babe's, well then as the ol' Southern saying goes, "Why, bless your heart!"...(Pro-Tip: The fried chicken is certainly worthy, but the chicken fried steak is really where it's at!)
An iconic Fort Worth staple since 1935 and situated near the historic Fort Worth Stockyards is Joe T. Garcia's restaurant. Serving up delicious family-style Tex-Mex fare in a large outdoor Spanish mission style courtyard (indoor dining also available), Joe T's is an experience not to be missed for the uninitiated newcomer to Fort Worth. ***Note: The restaurant is cash only. There are ATMs onsite, but skip the ATM fees and take out cash ahead of time.***
German for "Home", Heim Barbecue is another highly recommended option for those craving real Texas BBQ. The Magnolia Ave location is the OG, but the "River" location on White Settlement Rd is recommended as it is bigger and can accommodate larger groups. Be sure to get some of the "Bacon Burnt Ends" - that is, hopefully assuming they aren't already sold out of 'em when you go! Oh, and their Green Chili Mac N' Cheese is absolutely killer, don't miss out!
Did you say you need breakfast? Well, look no further than Seven Mile Cafe! A local DFW area chain serving up a huge selection of savory "farm-to-table" brunch fare, including pancakes, waffles, biscuits, omelets, french toast, breakfast bowls, breakfast burritos, and much more, the size of the menu here is enough to make your eyes pop out of your head! And they even have a great selection of Vegan entrees for those with special dietary needs. Pro-Tip: Their fresh squeezed OJ is unbeatable. Better yet, get it in mimosa form! The Keller location is listed here, but there is also a North Fort Worth location on I-35W which may be closer to some hotels.
