Sarah and Joe met through a mutual friend during their sophomore year at the University of Vermont. Although there was near-immediate chemistry between them, they didn't start dating until the following year. They shared a class during the spring semester of their junior year, an English course on Renaissance-era plays. There was an option to perform a scene from one of the plays instead of writing a paper. They took this option, performing a scene from The Roaring Girl with another student whose name has since been forgotten to time. After performing the scene, Sarah and Joe continued to hang out and began dating shortly before the end of the semester. After graduating in May 2013, Sarah and Joe continued living in Burlington for four years, until they moved to Denver in the summer of 2017.
After nearly seven years together, Joe popped the question in March 2019, while he and Sarah were visiting his parents in Florida. The four of them were at the beach when Joe asked Sarah if she wanted to go for a walk. When they got past the crowded part of the beach, Joe asked a nearby woman if she'd take a photo of him and Sarah, cluing her in on his plan to propose. After the first photo, Joe dropped the knee, and Sarah said yes.
