Reading a copy of Garden and Gun, Nate came across an article about Melissa Martin, a New Orleans chef who started her own restaurant to celebrate her family’s heritage in Terrebonne Parish in southern Louisiana. Raised on her grandmother’s cooking, Melissa used her family’s recipes to recreate home cooking for her restaurant, 24 guests each night. All of her food is sourced within 100 miles of her restaurant. Aside from her New Orleans Supper Club, Melissa operates a houseboat, a 100 year-old hunter’s cabin rebuilt on a barge, where she hosts small gatherings in the Atchafalaya Basin outside Lafayette. Nate proposed on this houseboat, shortly before we enjoyed dinner. After dinner, we both knew that sharing this experience with our family and friends would be the wedding of which we had always dreamed.
