The long-range vision of the Marine Discovery Center is to see a healthy Indian River Lagoon (IRL) Estuary and the ecosystem it supports preserved and enjoyed for its natural beauty, unmatched diversity of species, and rich fishery for generations to come. Initiatives and activities designed to achieve this vision include providing education, research, restoration, and heightened public awareness of this wondrous, fragile natural resource. In order to preserve the IRL for the enjoyment of future generations, a goal of the Marine Discovery Center is to showcase the biodiversity of this treasured natural resource and to examine, research, and encourage human interaction “ON THE WATER” with the estuary.
Flagler Avenue is a well-known boulevard that runs just five blocks from the Atlantic Ocean on the East to the Intracoastal Waterway on the West. The avenue, named after prominent railroad builder, Henry Flagler, is the historic hub of New Smyrna Beach and is dotted with shops, restaurants, galleries, and more. It is an ideal spot to visit for shopping, beach life, and history– there is something for everyone on Flagler Avenue. Visitors and locals alike come together to enjoy Flagler Avenue’s art festivals, wine walks, music festivals, and even a seafood festival. The street also boasts lively nightlife. There are many things to see and do, and several places to stay, right on Flagler Avenue. Don’t miss the charm!
This historic lighthouse, located right across from New Smyrna Beach, is the second tallest masonry lighthouse in the country. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998 and continues to be a destination for visitors from all over the world. Anyone who isn't scared of heights can trek up the 203 steps to the top of the tower, which stands 175 feet high and offers spectacular views of the Atlantic coastline and its beautiful beaches. You can also check out the museum that provides an in-depth look into Florida's maritime history.
