Paths were first crossed at an appreciation dinner at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for the Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC) staff, interns, and volunteers. While no conversations were had at this moment it would be a pivotal moment in their story. After SORAC, Karl decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. While applying for veterinary assistant jobs Karl applied to Ocean View Vet Hospital, the same vet clinic where Brittney worked. Once Karl applied the manager approached Brittney and asked if she knew of Karl since SORAC was on their resume. Brittney replied "The research team call them Good Karl and I've heard they're nice." and with that, Karl was hired. A few months later a friendship began when realizing they both had an interest in the outdoors, video games, and animals, but the real relationship wouldn't begin until a year later. Six months before Karl was to move to London to begin studying at the Royal Veterinary College Karl took the chance and asked Brittney on a date. Knowing that time was short, both agreed they did not want to do long distances and packed their time together with weekend adventures to San Fransico, surfing and paddle boarding around Monterey, hikes in Big Sure, late-night video gaming, and even a trip to Walt Disney World. When the time came for Karl to move both realized there was something special about this relationship and felt they could handle long distance. So a year of Skype dates and online video gaming commenced until Brittney took the leap and moved to London. Both continued to pursue their passion for animals while also taking time to explore everything the UK and Europe had to offer. They even survived being constantly together during the strict UK lockdown. Once Brittney had completed her Masters in Wild Animal Biology at the Royal Veterinary College she had to return to the US, starting another year of long distance. They were reunited in Long Beach where Karl started a rotating internship and Brittney worked at the Aquarium of the Pacific. They only had a year back together before Karl had to move to Houston for a year-long Veterinary Surgical internship at Gulf Coast Animal Hospital. Being in Houston was one of Karl's most difficult years in veterinary medicine. With extremely long hours and a high volume of surgeries, there was little time spent together but that time was made up with a quick trip to where it all started, Monterey, California. It was there they relived the memories they first made together and made one very important new one. On January 20, 2023, Karl proposed to Brittney at Point Lobos State Reserve. This engagement was a short celebration because they had to return to their separate lives in Houston and Long Beach. However, six months later they would be reunited and move across the country to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (somewhere they never would have put on their adventure bingo). This move was for Karl to start a Research Surgical Internship at the University of Pennsylvania which would then turn into a Surgical Residency. Brittney also was able to start a dream job, working as a veterinary technician at a zoo. Now that they are finally settling into a routine the time for a wedding can finally begin!
