Question

What are the COVID requirements?

Answer

As of December 2021: U.S. citizens are not required to show proof of vaccination to enter Mexico or return to the U.S. Mexico does not require COVID testing or vaccination before arrival. You will be required to fill out a customs declaration form upon arrival in Mexico. Be sure to keep the part of the form they hand back to you, as you'll need it when you fly home. All U.S. citizens above 2 years of age will be required to show a negative COVID test taken within one day of departure to the U.S. The airport/airlines will verify negative COVID-19 test results. You will also be required to fill out some COVID-related forms at the airport before you'll be allowed through security. The resort will provide COVID testing on-property at no cost to guests staying three nights or longer who are traveling to the U.S. See the resort's full Health & Safety information here: https://www.mahekalbeachresort.com/health-and-safety

Question

Should I get travel insurance?

Answer

A policy that includes coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel delays, and medical expenses and medical evacuation (including COVID-related expenses) isn't a bad idea. The price depends on the length of your trip, the ages of the travelers and the total cost. World Nomads offers low-cost insurance, but note that the Standard plan only covers up to $2,500 for trip cancellation. Check out Forbes' list of the best travel insurance plans or compare other plans on sites like SquareMouth and AARDY. Some credit cards offer travel insurance benefits if the trip if booked on that card. Check your card benefits for details.

Question

How do I get to the resort?

Answer

VIA CANCUN Fly into Cancun (CUN) and take a car service directly to the resort from the airport. The ride takes about 45 minutes and a private service will usually cost between $60-80 USD for up to 9 people one way. We recommend using First Choice VIP https://www.firstchoicevip.biz/. There is also a public bus, Ado Bus, from the airport to downtown Playa (https://www.cancunairport.com/public-buses.html) for around $13 USD one way. You'll need to take a 10 minute taxi ride to the resort from the Playa bus terminal. The terminal is in a tourist plaza, so taxis should be easy to find. They take pesos and cost around $50 MXN (>$5 USD). VIA COZUMEL Fly into Cozumel (CZM) and take the Ultramar Ferry (https://www.ultramarferry.com/en) across to Playa. The ferry costs $25 round trip and takes about 45 minutes. You'll need to take taxis from the CZM airport to the ferry and from the ferry to the resort. Unless the flight to Cozumel is significantly cheaper, we recommend flying into Cancun.

Question

How early should I get to the airport when flying home?

Answer

You should plan to arrive at the Cancun airport a full three hours before your departure time. The airport is often very crowded. Checking your luggage, filling out the required COVID paperwork (if still applicable), and getting through security can take a long time if the airport is at its busiest. Cozumel airport is smaller and less busy.

Question

What is the weather like?

Answer

The Riviera Maya is a stretch of Carribbean coastline in the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula. In May, the temperatures range from 80-90 F and the humidity is generally high. In other words, it's hot and the sun is strong during the morning and afternoon. The nights generally cool off and are very comfortable. It does rain, but it's often short-lived and infrequent.

Question

What currency do I need?

Answer

Most places accept credit cards but there are lots of smaller shops and food stands that are cash only. Some places may accept USD but we recommend just getting pesos from an ATM. Most supermarkets or plazas will have an ATM that let you take out pesos with your debit card. Make sure you have travel notifications set up so your bank doesn't decline transactions. (And be sure to remove your debit card from the machine when you're done!) You can see the USD to MXN exchange rate here: https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/USDMXN:CUR

Question

Is Mexico dangerous?

Answer

No, the Riviera Maya it is not any more dangerous than U.S. cities. You'll find that Mexico is generally a very safe place and most people are nicer than your average New Yorker. Keep your wits about you like you would for any other trip to another country and don't flaunt your money or valuables in public.

Question

What's the time zone?

Answer

Playa del Carmen is on Eastern Standard Time (EST) but does not observe Daylight Savings. Since the wedding is in May, we will be one hour behind EST.
