Question

What should I know about traveling to Honduras?

Answer

Getting there: You’ll fly into Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB) in Roatán. It’s a small and easy-to-navigate airport with direct flights from several U.S. cities, as well as connections through mainland Honduras. Passport & Entry Requirements A valid passport is required for all international travelers. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates (recommended). U.S. citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. (If you’re traveling from outside the U.S., please check your country’s specific entry requirements.) *Please have the address of where you will be staying on hand, as the immigration agents will ask you for it at the time of your entry. When you arrive at the airport, you may be asked to fill out information regarding your visit. Look for QR codes to scan when you get off the plane before you get in line for immigration. Immigration can take up to 3 hours to clear. Currency The local currency is the Honduran Lempira (HNL), but U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas like Roatán. Small bills are helpful for taxis and tips. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants. Health & Safety Stick to bottled or filtered water. Pack bug spray (especially for evenings). Roatán is generally safe, especially in resort and tourist areas — just use normal travel awareness as you would anywhere. Tips: Highly recommended to lock your checked suitcase Things to Do Roatán is famous for its snorkeling and diving along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world. If you’re making a vacation out of it (which we highly recommend!), there’s plenty of beach time, water activities, and island exploring to enjoy.
