Tale as Old as Time

Barely even friends, then somebody bends... unexpectedly

Though their story didn't begin in the same vein as most romantic novels, it's usually a hit at parties. Brian was working at Friday's when Kate walked in with her family. Having just gone through a messy breakup, Kate's confidence was at an all time low, and so was her self-respect. When her server was a cute guy, she decided she couldn't possibly feel any worse about herself so she left her number. He didn't call. She wasn't surprised. A few months later, Kate told Miriam (see bridesmaid page) about this rejection. Miriam refused to believe it. "There is no way he rejected you. He didn't get your number. Someone threw it in the trash." Kate was over it, resigned to her belief that she would never love again. Miriam dragged her to Friday's and, using a fake name, called the hostess stand to see if Brian was working. He was--but this time he had a full beard and was unrecognizable from the handsome prince Kate had seen before... aside from those twinkling eyes. After Miriam interrogated the staff, a fellow server brought Brian to the table, much to Kate's dismay. "Do you remember any of us?" Miriam demanded. Brian looked at the three women and then pointed to Kate. "You came in with your family," he said. "She left her number, you didn't call!" (Kate tried to melt under the table.) "I didn't get her number, I swear. Someone must have cleared the table." "If she gave it to you again, would you call?" Brian made a polite excuse to get back to work. Kate and the girls finished their meal. With her self-respect still in the basement, Kate wrote her number on a paper napkin ring before leaving the restaurant and marched up to Brian and plopped it into his palm. "Here's to second chances," she said bravely, and perhaps stupidly. He texted her after his shift that night before he even got out of his car.
