Derreck and I went to Bend for our three-year anniversary. Just a small weekend trip to celebrate, nothing crazy. Our hotel room at the Riverhouse Lodge was one on the bottom floor with a big firepit right on the bank of the river. I remember standing on the patio looking up at the stars, breathing in the cold breeze from the river and just absorbing the peace and quiet. Derreck made dinner reservations for us at a fancy steakhouse downtown, so I went to get dolled up, as one does. Once I finished, he asked if I wanted my anniversary present. Of course I did, so I sat down and he turns to grab it from his bag, but then stops and turns around. "okay, the box LOOKS like a ring box, but its not. Its longer than a ring box. Its rectangular." he says. "ooooookay?" I kind of laugh because he had to make it so clear it wasn't a ring. He hands me a blue box that is indeed rectangular. When I open it, it is a pair of diamond earrings!! I immediately jumped to hug him, thanking him and kissing his face. He asked if I wanted to wear them for dinner, and I was too excited to NOT wear them. I ran to the bathroom and put them on, admired them in the mirror, then asked Derreck, "do they look good? And is my hair straight in the back? ... no answer. Thinking its strange of him not to respond, I go back to the main space to find he is outside with the fire pit on, sitting on a stool warming his hands. He asked me to join him, saying that we had time before wee had to leave for our reservation. I sat on a stool opposite him, wiggling a little bit as the ground was uneven and the stool rocked. Derreck looked at me, smiled, stood, and said "so, I lied to you". My breath caught. What could he have lied to me about? He takes a step toward me. He never lies, so why would he admit to doing so? Another step, but this time he reaches for his pocket and pulls out a slim box. My hands fly to my mouth, I stand, then sit, then stand again. "I don't know what to do with myself." He sits me down on the stool again, tells me he loves me, and that he had a speech prepared but couldnt remember a word of it. There was too much blood pumping through my ears for me to listen anyway. He cried, I cried, and finally, he got down on his knee and opened the box. A box that was custom made for us, with both of our names on the front of it. He asked me to marry him. I think I said yes seven times. I cannot wait to start forever with this man.
