It was December of 2018 in San Marcos, TX. We were just your typical college students at Texas State gathering at a mutual friend's house. He was supposed to be set up on a blind date that night but as soon as he saw me, he said, "I'm with the wrong date". After that night he took every opportunity he could to interact with me, and while I was careful, I never turned him down. Despite us being very different people at the time, he was determined to be the best man he could be for me. We went on our first date to what is now our favorite Mexican restaurant in San Marcos and the rest is history!
He always said it would be a private moment, with no one around. So when we had planned a whole weekend to host some of our closest friends, the possibility of a proposal was far from my mind. Brandon's best friend, Anyssa, had never been to Memphis before and she told us that she wanted to go take pictures downtown. She was the guest and we were the hosts, so pictures it was! Us girls got dressed, the boys went to pick up DJ from the airport, and we all headed downtown. We ended up at one of our favorite brewery's pop up locations right on the Mississippi River. The bar was about to close for the evening but they squeezed us in and we all decided we were double fisting it that night. Once we found a table to hold all 10 beers, Anyssa asked Brandon and I to go take her and Mike's pictures. The Mississippi River in the background, sunset glowing, they looked adorable. Then it was our turn. We fought over which one of us got to stand on the left, since its both of our 'good sides' but in the end, I stand on the right. Brandon reminded me that it had officially been 365 days since we first moved to Memphis and started creating this amazing life. Of course, I had to argue with him first, claiming it wasn't until the next day but he was right. I took in the moment and I was smiling super hard as I realized how far we've come in just a year. Meanwhile, our friends were all recording, taking pictures, and excitedly watching as Brandon reached in his pocket for the ring. He got down on one knee and I immediately thought he was playing a cruel joke on me, as people were clearly present for the moment he always said would just be us two. But he opened the box and I was blinded by the sparkle in his eyes and in my ring. By this point, I was sobbing and when he popped the question the only response I could give him was something of a high pitched squeal and an enthusiastic head nod. The sobs only got bigger as he smothered me in a hug, the cheers from the small crowd and our friends signaling the beginning of a celebration. And before you ask, yes our beer was warm when we got back to the table and yes, we still drank it. But don't worry, we promise to have plenty of cold beer waiting for you to celebrate with us!
