HE SAYS: Spoiler alert, this story has a happy ending. Kian first got to know Braelyn at camp in the summer of 2012 (check out the Gallery for a hilariously young-looking Kian). Kian caught feelings pretty immediately and spent most of camp trying to spend as much time with Braelyn as possible. A few months later, Kian shot his shot, and it was from full court. He not only asked Braelyn to homecoming, but also asked her to be his girlfriend at the dance. Braelyn gave a very polite ‘yes’ on the dancefloor, and then let Kian down easy with a ‘let’s be friends’ at the afterparty. Over the next year, Kian and Braelyn stayed friends and continued getting to know each other better through school, YoungLife events, serving on class board, and going on a mission trip together. Then at the beginning of Junior year, Kian ran it back one more time. He’s not a big ‘learn from your mistakes’ guy, at least not when it comes to Braelyn. He asked Braelyn to homecoming, and the day before the dance he asked her to be his girlfriend again. Braelyn responded with a 'yes', then a later ‘let’s be friends’ again. Only a few weeks later, in October of Junior year, Braelyn and Kian are doing classic high schooler stuff – just hanging out in the bed of Haley’s (now a bridesmaid) pickup truck in a McDonalds parking lot for no reason. Later that night, Kian drives Braelyn back to her house and in the drive way she turns to him and asks him to be her boyfriend. Game on. Who knew 10 years later, almost to the day, these jolly kids would get engaged. SHE SAYS: Braelyn’s first core memory with Kian was in the summer of 2012 at Crooked Creek Younglife Camp. She happened to know that this cute boy, Kian, and his friend, Ben, woke up early to throw around a frisbee, so she would make her friend (and now bridesmaid), Margaret, wake up early to do their camp workbook. Being the only 4 awake at that hour, they decided to go for a walk around the campus when a car full of Work Crew members abruptly stopped next to them blasting Jesse McCartney’s “Beautiful Soul” and sang passionately to them out of their window. A few months later Kian would go on to do a lip sync and dance to that very song in Braelyn’s driveway with Cooper (his now-brother-in-law’s brother) to ask her to Sophomore year homecoming. Braelyn said “yes.” When homecoming arrives Kian shoots his sweet shot during the last slow dance of the night (of the straight arm no eye contact variety) and asks her to be his girlfriend. Braelyn says a shaky "yes"…. And later that night sadly tells him she sees him more as a friend. The two stayed friends. The following year Kian once again asks Braelyn to homecoming and once again to be his girlfriend (because it worked so well last year). Braelyn replies with a more confident "yes"… then a confusing “not yet”… Less than a month passes when the deep regret sets in for Braelyn, so she took her next opportunity alone with Kian (10/26/13) to ask him to be her boyfriend. Where he rightfully replied, “Only if you're serious this time.” The two have been together ever since participating in high school Class Board, Homecoming Court, attending Indiana University, studying in Australia, traveling Europe and the US, and moving back to Chicago where the two now happily live together.
