Newport may be best known for its stunning Gilded Age mansions - we especially love the self-guided walking tour of the Breakers, which was the Vanderbilts' "summer cottage" for the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Newport also offers a range of activities including the Cliff Walk, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, shopping, and a great selection of restaurants and bars.
Wakefield Village features a walkable strip of shops and restaurants, including some of our favorite watering holes (Mews Tavern, Whalers Brewing Company), dining options (Duck Press, Phil's Restaurant, South County Bread Co.), and sweet treats (Brickley's Ice Cream).
Folk art and handmade gifts? Sure. Vintage shopping? You got it. Emus? Why not. This local landmark in Charlestown defies explanation and never fails to surprise. We highly recommend if you're looking for a creative and unexpected souvenir from your time in Rhode Island!
The South County Bike Path (a baby Beltline, for our Atlanta friends) covers 8 miles of beautiful, relatively flat terrain for anyone who may be interested in exploring the area by bike (bike rentals are available locally.) The Bike Path starts at the Kingston Amtrak station, passes and connects to the campus of the University of Rhode Island (Tighe's alma mater - Go Rams!), cuts through Peace Dale and Wakefield villages, and ends near Narragansett Beach - with multiple opportunities for shopping, snacking, and sipping along the route.
-Matunuck Oyster Bar, 629 Succotash Rd, Wakefield, RI 02879 - Reservations required as this is the hottest spot in town for local seafood, especially the oysters which are farmed right across the pond from the restaurant. Also, it's pronounced Mah-too-nuck. -Del's Frozen Lemonade, 49 Old Tower Hill Rd, South Kingstown, RI 02879 - Stop at the sign of the lemon for this beloved local treat...just don't ask for a straw or a spoon, unless you want to be outed as a first timer! -Crazy Burger Cafe & Juice Bar, 144 Boon St, Narragansett, RI 02882 - Amazing burgers (+ their homemade ketchup!), vegetarian and vegan fare, and all-day breakfast (including their cinnamon rolls - Brad's favorite)...Guy Fieri was onto something when he featured Crazy Burger on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2009.
