PASSPORT: If you didn't already know, you'll need a valid passport to celebrate with us in Mexico. Please make sure that it's up to date and won't expire while you're on the trip. WiFi: There is free and open WiFi at the resort. However, we noticed that some work emails might not come through (shame on you for even checking). A workaround would be using your cell phone as a hotspot. ROAMING FOR CALLS AND TEXTS: Double-check to see if your cell phone plan includes roaming for calls and texts in Mexico (most do), especially if you have some little babies that will need your attention while you're gone.
Aside from the obvious things, here is a list of items that you may want to consider bringing: Vaccination card (hopefully this is obvious) - please bring a hard copy of the original if you can. At the very least, have a photo of it on your phone. And get that booster shot, y'all! Sunscreen - a lot of it (the sun don't F around south of the border) Bug spray - we were told that in the month of February, mosquitos down there also don't play nice. A Bubba Keg/YETI/something large & insulated to keep your beverage cold at the pool (don’t be shy, your cold drink will thank you!) Traditional over-the-counter medicines like Pepto or Advil (they are grossly overpriced at the resort) Water shoes - the pool floor isn’t the smoothest.
There aren't any dress codes at the resort, so dress comfortable, sexy & resort-ready! The wedding will be standard formal wear with a hint of vacay vibes. Things to consider: Our wedding is NOT on the beach. Do what you want with that information (i.e., ladies will be a-okay with heels and wedges). Gentlemen, it may be helpful to know that Bill & his groomsmen will be wearing suits, but NOT ties.
This app is pretty awesome. We recommend using it for the following very important things: Make reservations for dinner: you can check out menus, etc. Order room service: late-night churros and pepperoni pizza? Morning breakfast in bed? Do it on the app! Check out the activities schedule: there are various activities on the property throughout the week: mixology classes, bingo, dance classes, hydro spin class, etc. Those are examples of their free ones, but there are also some for a charge that are pretty cool (wine & tequila tastings, etc.) and may require reservations. In addition to the app, you also have a personal concierge/butler, which you can easily communicate via text or WhatsApp. You can ask for very particular things like — oh, I don’t know — prepping your outdoor bubble bath while you’re out & about, having churros delivered late-night, etc. Not-so-fun fact: chocolate-covered strawberries require a 24-hour heads up. Did we mention they have churros?
IS THERE A WEDDING HASHTAG? Have you met Eunice? Duh. Our wedding hashtag is #shipshipolé. There’s a similar one out there that has the accent going the opposite direction, so make sure you see our post from when we visited in October. Please use it to create our virtual scrapbook! We highly recommend using the UNICO 20º87º app to make dinner reservations BEFORE you arrive. If you wait until the last minute, chances are that you'll be eating at odd times or frequently using room service. This may change, but when we went in October, there weren't buffets because of COVID. Mura House (Asian/Sushi + Teppanyaki) Mi Carisa (Italian) Cueva Siete (Mexican) 20º87º (à la carte — this is your best bet for walk-in seating. Also, this is where you will find the buffet... if they bring it back by then)
MUST DRINKS: The Passion Fruit Margarita is THE drink to order at the pool. Try at least one if that typically isn't your jam. Also, the frozen piña colada is just okay… unless you mix it with a strawberry daiquiri (i.e., a Miami Vice). Then it's 🔥. Also, don't neglect all the drinks in your room's mini-fridge. We made the mistake of not taking advantage of that perk/convenience. MUST EATS: Mi Carisa is our favorite restaurant on the property (Italian). Trust us — you'll want to go! POOLSIDE EATS Shrimp tacos Caesar salad Made-to-order oven pizzas Hot-honey O(nion) rings...O, damn Most dishes at UNICO 20°87° are tiny. Don't be shy — order a lot. NOTABLE MENTION: Café Inez (your Starbucks substitute at the resort) — so no reservation needed. Think: coffee, tea, fresh juices & baked goods in the morning. Sandwiches, paninis, & meal-sized salads for lunch and dinner.
If you want to claim some rock star chairs by the pool, throw something on them as early as 6 or 7am... but be there by 10am to make sure you keep them. Carlos is the man if you run into him while you’re doing that. He’ll put your towels down and even get you an umbrella if you want. He’ll also help you claim chairs that someone threw items on but did not claim by 10am. We also recommend checking out the quiet pool (La Escondida) at least once during your trip. Think grabbing a cup of coffee in the AM for a peaceful stroll, stopping there for some quiet downtime, reflection & zen.
The beach is impressive… once you hook a LEFT and walk along the shore for about 2 minutes. Please hang out with us there from 11 to 1 on Saturday before the Happily Ever After {Pool} Party!
We stole this one from the internet: Supposedly, if you want a massage that is less expensive than what the resort charges, head out to the beach and hook a RIGHT. Seems like there's a local "spa" on the beach right at the property line that charges only $60 for what was "the best massage I've ever had. It was amazing, said everyone in my family. Even my sister, who is a massage therapist."
Yes, bring cash for tips. *Check out FAQs* We recommend bringing some twenties for beginning-of-the-day tipping (to ensure top-notch service for hours). We noticed how valuable it was for our experience!
A study conducted by the International Journal of Celebrations & Joyous Occasions (January, 2016) proved that you will have MORE FUN if you meet and mingle with people that you haven't met yet or see very often. We challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and meet at least 53 new people! 😉
