We met on June 15, 2019 at a International assembly in Berlin Germany. The assembly title that year: "Love Never Fails", and it did not fail! On the second day of assembly Joel coincidentally sat next to Maritza and she said, "Hello". He asked if she wanted to eat with a group of friends after assembly, but she did not go as she already had plans. The next day Joel intentionally sat in the same section as Maritza, and again asked her out to eat, this time she went. They talked the whole way to the restaurant and she sat down next to him. Afterwards Joel asked for Maritza's phone number and from there they kept in touch here and there. He went back to his life in California and she went back to her life in Iowa. Then pandemic hit, things slowed down and they would invite each other to group hangouts for service and game nights via zoom. When things started opening back up Joel would visit his relatives in Minnesota and would invite Maritza and her family to hangout, with the intention of knowing the secret person of the heart. On January 24, 2024 Joel asked Maritza to be his girlfriend and she said, "yes". After 10 months of dating Joel was convinced and started planning the proposal. After 5 months of planning and secrecy, on March 23, 2025, Joel knelt down and asked, "Will you marry me?". Maritza was caught in total surprise but without hesitation said, "YES"! El segundo día de asamblea, por casualidad Joel se sentó junto a Maritza y ella lo saludó. Él le preguntó si quería comer con un grupo de amigos después de la asamblea, pero ella no fue porque ya tenía planes. Al día siguiente, Joel se sentó intencionalmente en la misma sección que Maritza y la invitó de nuevo a comer, y esta vez si fue. Hablaron todo el camino hasta el restaurante y ella se sentó a su lado. Después, Joel le pidió el número de teléfono de Maritza y desde entonces se mantuvieron en contacto de vez en cuando. Joel regresó a su vida en California y Maritza a Iowa. Luego llegó la pandemia, y abrió la oportunidad para invitarse el uno al otro a pasar tiempo con amigos para el servicio y noches de juegos por zoom. Cuando la situación empezó a mejorar, Joel visitaba a sus familiares en Minnesota e invitaba a Maritza y a su familia a pasar el rato, con la intención de conocer a la persona secreta del corazón. El 24 de Enero de 2024, Joel le pregunto a Maritza que sea su novia, y ella dijo, "Si". Tras 10 meses de noviazgo, Joel estaba convencido y comenzó a planear la propuesta. Tras 5 meses de planificación y secretismo, el 23 de Marzo de 2025, Joel se arrodilló y preguntó: "¿Quieres casarte conmigo?". Maritza quedó totalmente sorprendida, pero sin dudarlo, dijo: "¡SÍ!".
