The Wedding Website of Kim Keller and Bobby DeSimone
Santa Teresa is a remote beach town that is located 3.5-4.5 hours away from two airports (image of the map contains recommended routes). While it may not be the most convenient place to travel, the beaches and scenery are absolutely worth it! Aiport options: 1) San José International airport (SJO) 2) Liberia Airport (LIR) Daniel Oduber Travel options from San José: 1) Rental --> ferry --> Santa Teresa 2) Shuttle (includes ferry) the entire way 3) Domestic flight to Tambor airport --> taxi/rental car to Santa Teresa Travel options from Liberia: 1) Rental car the entire way 2) Shuttle the entire way 3) Domestic flight to Tambor airport --> taxi/rental car to Santa Teresa On this page, you will find all of the information you will need regarding your travel options.

Instructions

The direct route from Liberia to Santa Teresa takes 3.5-4 hours. The majority of the drive is on p a paved road. From Cobano to Santa Teresa sections of the road are unpaved. Although not strictly necessary, a 4×4 or a car with clearance is highly recommended. We HIGHLY recommend driving down the eastern side (Route 21) of the peninsula, through Naranjo to Paquera, and then on to Santa Teresa. You will pass through Santa Cruz, Nicoya, Jicaral, Naranjo, and then Paquera, Tambor, and Cobano, before arriving in Santa Teresa. Our wedding is taking place during the green season and we do not want you ending up stuck driving through a river. Even if your GPS tells you another way is faster, stay on the paved road! When you get to Cobano keep going straight to go to Santa Teresa. Follow the signs for “Mal Pais” and “Santa Teresa”. Drive for 10 kilometers and make sure to turn left at the 3-way junction. When you arrive at the Playa Carmen crossroads, turn right to go to Santa Teresa.

Instructions

Step 1: Getting to Puntarenas: The fastest route to Puntarenas, which is where you need to go to catch the ferry is a newer toll road (about 500 colones (< $1) per toll, there are multiple tolls) is called the Caldera Highway (Autopista del Sol), or Route 27. Step 2: Take the Ferry (more information under Ferry) Step 3: Paquera to Santa Teresa: When the ferry lands in Paquera, you will then drive to Santa Teresa (or MalPais), which will take you past Tambor and Cobano before arriving in Santa Teresa. When you get to Cobano keep going straight to go to Santa Teresa (a left turn will take you to Montezuma). Follow the signs for “Mal Pais” and “Santa Teresa”. Drive for 10 kilometers on the often unpaved road. Make sure to turn left at the 3-way junction, (you’ll see signs for Malpais and Santa Teresa). [If you continue straight you’ll end up in Rio Negro]. When you arrive at the Playa Carmen crossroads at the entrance of town, turn right to go to Santa Teresa.

Flight

Domestic Flight Option #1 Sansa Airlines (our preferred airline)

You have the option of taking a 25-minute flight from San José or Liberia Airport to Tambor. From Tambor Airport, you can either rent a car or take a taxi through tropical shuttle tours (see below for more information). The trip from Tambor airport to Santa Teresa is approximately 40 minutes. The full May schedule is now up! ** Please note that Sansa SOMETIMES does not fly on Sundays.

Flight

Domestic Flight Information # 2 Green Air

A second option is to take Green Air. They typically have more flights than Sansa, but they only fly in and out of San José. Please note that their website can be a bit wonky at times, and you may need to try a different browser to get to their booking page. Another important note is that they have had some scheduling issues in the past where they may move you to an earlier flight than the one you had scheduled. Typically, this has not caused problems with missing flights home, just getting to the airport early.

Ferry Information

Travel Note

Paqueria Ferry

If you are traveling by car from San José, the best and quickest way is straight on Route 27 for about an hour and thirty minutes, until you reach Puntarenas. From Puntarenas, you take the ferry across the gulf to the town of Paquera. The ferry schedules are seasonal so make sure to confirm the times prior to planning your drive. Once the ferry docks in Paquera it will be a 70-minute drive on the main road to Santa Teresa. Note: The website is in Spanish, so make sure to use Google chrome if you need it translated.
