Block Island (“officially the Town of New Shoreham”) is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 13 miles off of the coast of Rhode Island. Thousands of years ago, a glacier left rolling hills and ponds behind, forming what is now known as Block Island. The Narragansett Indians were the first inhabitants of Block Island as evidenced by remains that date back thousands of years. Their name for the island was “Manisses” which translates to “Island of the Little God.” Check out this recent Vogue article on the Island! https://www.vogue.com/slideshow/travel-guide-block-island-where-to-stay-eat-shop
Reservations are recommended for all transport to Block Island.
Block Island is very small (6 miles long small) and a car is not necessary at all. Every event wedding weekend is walking distance, and taxis are readily available on island. We recommend leaving your car at Pt. Judith where the ferries depart. These lots are $10-$20 a day, and are CASH ONLY. If you are renting a house further away from the downtown area, you might want to bring your car, but you will have to take the slow ferry & pay an extra fee.
