The Proposal

September 21, 2021

Everyone asks, “Skye, did you see it coming?” and part of me wants to believe the answer is “no." But, just a month or so before our engagement Blake had insistently asked me for several weeks to get my ring sized "for future reference." After spending the last few weeks cooped up in our home at the end of Summer 2020, Blake and I were looking forward to a week-long getaway in Maine where we would celebrate our three-year anniversary. Blake had planned a day's worth of events in Ogunquit the day of our anniversary but due to the not-so-desirable weather forecast, we decided to carry out our arrangements a day early. The night before, Blake had asked me what I was planning to wear on my feet to the beach to watch the sunrise. Normally, I would not consider this an unusual question for Blake to ask but, the terrified look on his face when I told him “My slippers” led me to wonder what he might have in store for the rest of the morning. We arrived at the beach just as the sun was about to rise - of course we were running behind since Blake decided he needed to look perfect at 5 o'clock in the morning. We quickly made our way to settle onto the sand and as I laid out our beach blanket, Blake was making a fuss behind me trying to keep a new to my knowledge selfie stick upright in the sand. He gave up and kicked the selfie stick over, hurried to sit down next to me on my right, and began frantically fishing around in his left pocket. He let out a dramatic yawn stretching his arm out around my back – VERY smooth!... “Sneak attack!” Blake said as he moved into a kneeling position. We burst out in a combination of laughter and tears and the next thing I knew I was engaged to marry my very best friend.
