Visit the South Carolina State House grounds. The State House grounds are a beautifully landscaped 18 acres of trees including palmetto, live oak, water oak, magnolia, elms, ginkgos, and many others. Construction of the State House started in 1851 and completed in 1907. Of interest are six bronze stars in the west side of the building marking where Union cannon shells from General Sherman’s army struck the building during the Civil War. The marks where the shells hit are visible. Also go see the statue of George Washington in front of the State House. Yankee soldiers threw bricks at it, and broke his cane! The State House is located at the corner of Assembly and Gervais Streets. Seven minute walk from the hotel.

The Basilica of Saint Peter

1529 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201

In 1820 work was begun on the Columbia Canal. Large numbers of Irish indentured servants were brought in to dig the canal with many dying from malaria and other southern diseases. In 1821 Fr. James Wallace an Irish priest was sent to minister them. In 1824 the first church was built. In 1906 the original building was razed and the present church was built in the Gothic Revival style. Pope John Paul II held an audience at St. Peter’s in 1987. In 2018 the Vatican declared St. Peter’s a Minor Basilica. Many of the Irish canal diggers are buried in the graveyard behind the church.
