Flight
This is the main gateway for international air traffic into the island. The airport is located about three miles southeast of San Juan. Below is the average travel time from major U.S. cities and does not account for layovers or delayed flights: Miami: 2.5 hrs. Atlanta: 3 hrs. 15 mins. New York: 3 hrs. 15 mins. Philadelphia: 3 hrs. 40 mins. Washington, DC: 3.5 hrs. Los Angeles: 7.5 hrs. Entry Requirements and Customs: Since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, U.S. citizens coming from mainland destinations do not need passports to enter the island. All travelers must provide a government-issued photo ID (federal, state, or local) to board a plane, but a driver's license or birth certificate would suffice, in this case. For travelers visiting from countries that require a visa to enter the U.S., the same rules apply to enter into Puerto Rico. U.S. citizens do not need to go through Puerto Rican Customs upon arrival by plane or ship from the U.S.
