Then one night, while studying for a chemistry final, she sent a message she almost did not: “I can’t wait for this final to be over and be free for a little while. Would you like to hang out?” She panicked the second she hit send.
 Jared replied simply, “Of course I would!” Their first date happened sooner than planned, on a Monday night at The Bottle Room. They shared food, conversation came easily, and laughter followed, including over the beer Jared ordered before Berenice arrived, a moment they still joke about. It was not flashy or performative.
