Question

How much do I tip?

Answer

Tipping is a personal choice and depends on the service rendered. If you feel that the person has been helpful, then go ahead and tip them. If not, don't feel obligated to tip. Many Guatemalans live in poverty, and tips can be an important part of their income. For the price of a cup of coffee, you can help feed their family. Tipping a few quetzales should be sufficient. For more extensive services – such as for naturalist guides or shuttle drivers – you may want to tip more. Taxi drivers do not expect a tip. Do note that upscale restaurants may automatically include a tip on the bill.

Answer

Guatemala has a rainy and dry season. The dry season (verano) lasts from around November until May, while the rainy season (invierno) lasts from May through November. December days in Antigua are sunny and warm, and nights might require a light jacket.

Question

Should I rent a car?

Answer

We do not recommend renting a car as Antigua is a walking city. To get from Guatemala City airport to Antigua please check out the "Travel & Hotel" page for Shuttle and Tour options.

Question

Is Guatemala safe?

Answer

In short: Yes. Guatemala's tourist destinations are typically very safe. There is an increased police presence in such places and minimal activity by criminal organizations. Violent crime against tourists is uncommon in these destinations. Petty theft, however, does occur, like in any country. To protect yourself, don't flaunt expensive items in public and leave your valuables in a safety deposit box at your hotel. If you are robbed, don't resist. Give the thieves what they want and don't fight back. This applies to ANY country. Stick to reputable tourist destinations. By sticking to tourism-friendly areas and activities, you'll ensure a safe trip.

Question

If I need medicines, can I easily get it?

Answer

Yes. There are pharmacies (*farmacias*) scattered across Guatemala and prescriptions are not necessary. Most towns have several pharmacies, with at least one open all night. Drugs are inexpensive.

Question

Is tap water safe to drink?

Answer

It is not safe to drink the tap water in Guatemala. To avoid traveler’s diarrhea and other water-borne diseases, drink bottled water and only eat peeled fruits like oranges and bananas. Bottled water (*agua pura*) is widely available in grocery stores, restaurants, and hotels. Boiling water for one minute or using iodine pills or a water filter will also purify water. Avoid fruits and veggies that require washing, and stay away from ice unless it’s made from purified water.

Question

Do I need to take malaria pills or get certain vaccinations?

Answer

Malaria pills = no need unless you're going to the jungle (which you will probably not). In Antigua, Guatemala City and Lake Atitlan, it is perfectly safe to go. No vaccinations are officially required to enter Guatemala. That said, it’s a good idea to be up-to-date on typhoid, rabies, yellow fever, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), and tetanus shots.

Question

Do I need an adaptor for my electronics?

Answer

Most outlets in Guatemala are 110 volts, the same as are found in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. If you’re coming from one of these countries you won’t need to bring an adaptor.
